SALEM, Va. – In another physical battle between two ODAC rivals, it was the Washington and Lee men's soccer team that prevailed, 1-0, over Roanoke on Saturday night in the teams' second meeting of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Generals (5-2-5, 3-0-1 ODAC) and Maroons (6-7, 0-4 ODAC) combined for just four shots in the first half – three from W&L and one from Roanoke – as both defenses kept the opposing attacks at bay.
- In the 49th minute, the Generals took a corner kick that senior Willy Hall sent into the box. After the ball was batted around a few times, it came out to first-year Chris Ordway at the top of the box, who passed back to Hall on his right. Hall then sent the ball goalwards, and it made it all the way through for the score.
- W&L remained in firm control of the game the rest of the way with eight shot attempts to three from the Maroons. Only an Ed Law shot in the 86th minute found the target in the second half, but senior keeper Will Joseph was there for the save.
- The Maroons' lone shot on goal in the first half was one of their best looks on the night as Lucas Pace fired a quick shot from right in front of the goal. Joseph had quick reflexes, however, and batted the ball to the side before it was ultimately cleared by the defense.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Hall's goal was his second of the season and he now leads the team with seven points, while Ordway picked up his first collegiate assist and point.
- Senior Buster Couhig led all players with five shot attempts, followed by two from junior Matthew Jenkins, who put both of his attempts on goal.
- Roanoke keeper Aidan McHugh totaled five saves and the one goal allowed across the 90 minutes of play.
- Joseph ended the night with two saves to record his fifth shutout of the season and the 28th of his career, extending his program record.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
- The Generals are now unbeaten in their last eight games, going 5-0-3, while the Maroons suffered their sixth consecutive loss on Saturday night.
- Saturday night's win also helped the Generals sweep the season series against Roanoke after a 2-0 win in Lexington on September 24.
TEAM STATS:
- W&L ended the night with a 14-4 advantage in total shot attempts, with a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Five of the Generals' shots on goal came in the second half.
- The Generals also won the corner-kick battle, 6-4. That included a 4-1 positive margin in the second half.
