Generals tie with No. 20 Christopher Newport

LEXINGTON, Va. – In another tight classic between two in-state, non-conference rivals, the Washington and Lee men's soccer team finished in a scoreless draw against No. 20 Christopher Newport on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In perhaps the closest opportunity to a goal from either side, it was the Generals (4-2-5) that nearly broke through on the scoreboard. On a throw-in in the 58th minute, the ball was redirected goalward but punched away by Hayden Dewey. Junior Taha Kaba then got a touch on the ball to put it inside the left post, the ball was cleared off the line by the defense.
  • The Captains (7-1-4) put two shots on goal in the first half and one in the second half, but W&L sophomore goalkeeper Miles Furman made each stop. His saves came in the 16th, 34th and 50th minutes.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Furman made three saves in 90 minutes of action to record his first shutout of the season and the team's fifth.
  • Dewey ended the day with two saves, one in both halves, to get credit for a clean sheet as well, to go along with the team defensive save in the 58th minute.
  • Kaba led all players in the game with three shots and he put two attempts on goal. Junior Jack Travis joined Kaba as the only two players with multiple shots in the game (2).
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
  • The Generals and Captains have split each of the last three meetings with one win each and Wednesday's draw. W&L still holds the upper hand in the all-time head-to-head, 6-3-3, and they have only dropped one game against the Captains in the last nine (5-1-3).
TEAM STATS:
  • Both teams were even across the board in shots. W&L outshot CNU, 5-4, in the first half while the Captains held the second-half edge, 5-4, for a 9-9 tie by the end of the game.
  • Both sides were also even in shots on goal at 3-3. W&L had two in the first half and one in the second to one in the first half and two in the second for the Captains.
  • Only three corners were taken in the game, and each was taken by CNU. They had one in the first half and two in the second half.
UP NEXT:
The Generals will return to the pitch on Saturday when they travel to Roanoke for a 5:00 p.m. kick-off. It will be the second meeting between the Generals and Maroons after W&L claimed a 2-0 non-conference win against Roanoke on September 24.
