Men's Soccer comes back against R-MC to keep ODAC unbeaten run alive

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team overcame a one-goal, first-half deficit to remain unbeaten in ODAC play, topping Randolph-Macon, 2-1, at home on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Yellow Jackets (7-3-3, 1-2-2 ODAC) stung first with a goal from Damien Jackson in the 28th minute. Following a foul deep in Generals (6-2-5, 4-0-1 ODAC) territory, Jackson sent a free kick into the box, but it went untouched and found its way into the back of the net.
  • The Generals responded quickly with a set-piece goal of their own in the 36th minute. Senior Willy Hall took the kick from 40 yards out and lofted the ball into the box. First-year Chris Ordway was on the receiving end with a header across the frame and inside the left post.
  • In the 60th minute, sophomore Trey Peterson was attacking and tried playing a cross, but had the ball deflected by the outstretched arm of an R-MC defender. A penalty kick was awarded, and senior Buster Couhig deposited it into the back of the net with ease.
  • The Yellow Jackets had two late, final chances but had a shot from Grayson Woods go well above the frame with 35 seconds left. In the final 15 seconds, a throw-in was put into the box, but nothing came of it as senior Will Joseph leapt and caught the ball to put the game into the win column.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Couhig's goal was his team-leading fourth of the season, while Ordway claimed his first collegiate goal.
  • Hall got the assist on Ordway's goal, his team-best fourth of the season. Hall has at least one point in three of the last four games and four of the last six contests.
  • Couhig, Hall, first-year Sami Seife and junior Taha Kaba led the Generals with two shot attempts each. R-MC's Tyler Oakes led all players with three shots.
  • Joseph finished the game with three saves across 90 minutes of action, while his counterpart, Ethan Chenoweth, made four stops.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Not only are the Generals still unbeaten in five ODAC games this season, they extended their conference undefeated streak to 22 games (16-0-6) dating back to the 2023 season.
  • Despite the goal against, the W&L backline is still holding strong this season allowing just 0.62 goals per game.
  • Wednesday's three points also keep the Generals in the hunt for the ODAC Tournament's top seed. They are tied with Bridgewater at 13 points following a Lynchburg loss to Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday.
TEAM STATS:
  • The teams were evenly matched in shot attempts, with the Generals owning the slight edge in the game, 14-13. The Yellow Jackets took seven of the 13 total attempts in the first half, followed by eight of the 14 in the second half by W&L.
  • The Yellow Jackets also claimed more corner kicks than the Blue and White by a final count of 7-2.
