GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior
Weyimi Agbeyegbe netted a goal in the 15th minute on Saturday to reach 100 career points to highlight the Washington and Lee men's soccer team's 6-0 defeat of Guilford.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The game did not remain scoreless for long as senior
PJ Ryan put the Generals (5-3, 2-0 ODAC) ahead in the ninth minute following a pair of quick passes between sophomores
Dmitri Tulloch and
Spencer Furman. Less than two minutes later, junior
Buster Couhig doubled the lead following a lob from outside the box from senior
Lucas Pleasants.
In the 15th minute, sophomore
Matthew Jenkins got the ball at midfield and sent a pass through the defense, where Agbeyegbe picked it up with no one in front of him. For the 40th time in his career, Agbeyegbe buried a shot into the back of the net for the 3-0 advantage.
The Generals' offense continued to roll with goals in the 22nd and 39th minutes from Pleasants and senior
Paul Collins, respectively, to take a 5-0 lead into halftime. The final dent on the scoreboard came in the 48th minute, again from Couhig, who scored from close range after a saved header from Furman was misplayed in the box by the defense.
Despite not scoring again after the 48th minute, the W&L attack continued to pressure the Guilford (3-5, 0-2 ODAC) defense, getting another 11 shots off and four on goal.
TOP PERFORMERS:
Couhig's brace put his season goal total at three, while Pleasants finished with a goal (3) and an assist (2). Agbeyegbe's goal marked his team-leading sixth of the season, third-highest total in the ODAC thus far, while Collins and Ryan both scored their first goals of the season. Additional assists were credited in the game to sophomore
Dmitri Tulloch (3), Jenkins (1), junior
Willy Hall (1) and sophomore
Trian Kechagias (1).
Junior goalkeeper
Will Joseph tallied one save in 63:51 of game time, before being relieved for first-year
Miles Furman. In his first collegiate appearance, Furman closed the final 26:09 of the game and made two saves to preserve the team shutout.
Riley Copeland was the only Guilford player to get off multiple shots, while Christopher Kelley played all 90 minutes in goal and made 10 saves.
NOTEWORTHY POINTS:
Agbeyegbe joined Sam Chase '99 (117) and Jamie Parker '00 (110) in the program's 100-career-point club on Saturday. Now with 40 goals in his career, Agbeyegbe is tied with Scott Fechnay '69 for third place on program's career goals list. Only Chase (52) and Parker (51) have more.
The Generals are off to a 2-0 start in ODAC play this season with their two conference wins this week. With a combined score of 9-0 in those games, it is the first time since the 2016 season that the program has not allowed a goal in either of its first two ODAC games of the season.
TEAM STATS:
The Blue and White ended the game with a 23-4 total shots advantage, which included 11-1 in the first half and 12-3 in the second half. Corner kicks also favored W&L by a 5-2 count.
