LYNCHBURG, Va. – Sophomores
Dmitri Tulloch and
Spencer Furman provided the offense on Wednesday, while the Washington and Lee men's soccer team's defense pitched a shutout in a 2-0 win at Randolph.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Generals (6-3, 3-0 ODAC) first dented the scoreboard in the 28th minute when they were awarded a corner kick. Tulloch then managed to find Furman for his first goal of the season. For the remainder of the half, the WildCats (2-3-5, 1-1-1 ODAC) were unable to attempt even once, while the Generals got one attempt each from first-years
Justin Ceccanecchio and
Ricardo Sanchez.
In the second half, W&L's defense continued its strong play by allowing just two total shots, but neither ended up on goal. Tulloch added to his side's total in the 65th minute with his third goal of the season, followed by a
Weyimi Agbeyegbe shot on goal in the 71st minute. Randolph's Carter Kelly stopped that shot, however, to keep it to a two-goal game.
TOP PERFORMERS:
Tulloch's one-goal, one-assist performance on Wednesday night boosted his season point total to 10 (3g, 4a), while Furman's score was the first of his collegiate career. The W&L defense made things easy on junior keeper
Will Joseph, who was not required to make a save in posting his third shutout of the season.
NOTEWORTHY POINTS:
Tulloch's 10 points this season have all come over the last five games, and Wednesday's outing was his third in the last five in which he has had both a goal and an assist.
The win improved the Generals to 3-0 in conference play so far this season, with each win coming in shutout fashion. It is the first time since 2016 that team has shut out each of its first three conference opponents, with the 2016 team doing so across the first four ODAC games.
By getting his third shutout of the season, Joseph now has 18 for his career, which puts him in sole possession of third-most in program history. His next would tie Joseph with Tim Foley '03 for second place, with the program record held by Michael Nyc '22 at 24 clean sheets.
TEAM STATS:
W&L ended the night with a 10-2 positive margin in total shots taken, taking five shots in both halves and allowing two in the second half. The Blue and White took 17 corner kicks in the game, the most in a game this season, and conceded only two.
