LEXINGTON, Va. – A late goal from the Washington and Lee men's soccer team equalized, as the Generals and Averett Cougars battled to a thrilling 2-2 finish on Watt Field on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
With his side down by a goal entering the final 10 minutes of play, senior
Weyimi Agbeyegbe powered a centering pass into the box that was redirected into the top-left corner of the goal by sophomore
Trian Kechagias. As the Generals (6-3-1, 3-0-1 ODAC) searched for the go-ahead goal, senior
PJ Ryan appeared to net the winner in the 85th minute, but it was nullified on an offside call.
The Generals took an initial 1-0 lead just 57 seconds into the game on sophomore
Dmitri Tulloch's fourth goal of the season. With the ball on the right side in the attacking third, junior
Buster Couhig tried to find sophomore
Matthew Jenkins on a through ball, but his pass was deflected to the left to senior
Will Luik. Luik then passed off to the left side to a sprinting Tulloch, who measured his shot perfectly and slotted it past the keeper and inside the right post.
Both Averett (3-4-4, 0-3-1 ODAC) goals came from Daniel Sierra, who entered both halves as a substitute. In the first half, Sierra came on in the 26th minute, only to score 90 seconds later on a centering pass from Max Gaudry. In the second half, Sierra entered in the 60th minute and scored six minutes later when he put a shot into the back of the net following a header into the crossbar from Daniel Starr.
TOP PERFORMERS:
Tulloch's opening goal was his fourth of the season, and it marks his third in the last four games. Kechagias scored the first goal of his collegiate career, while Agbeyegbe (3), Couhig (1) and Luik (1) all tallied one assist. Agbeyegbe led the offense with five shots and three on goal, with Tulloch and Couhig adding three attempts each, as well.
Sierra's two goals came on his only two attempts in the game across 39 minutes on the pitch. Gaudry and Starr both had an assist on the day, and goalkeeper Tyler Yates made seven saves across the 90 minutes.
NOTEWORTHY POINTS:
Agbeyegbe's assist on Kechagias's goal marked the 21st of his career, which puts him one away from tying Mike Mitchem '93 and Patrick Brown '90 for fourth place on the program's all-time assist list. It was also the 101st point of Agbeyegbe's career, nine away from tying Jamie Parker '00 for second.
TEAM STATS:
The Generals finished the day with a 17-6 advantage in total shots, including 10-3 in shots on goal. They held the shot lead, 10-1, at halftime, before Averett got five off in the second half. Corner kicks also favored the Blue and White by a 6-1 margin.
