Women's Tennis 2024 NCAA Tournament preview

W&L Women's Tennis 2024 NCAA Tournament Opening Weekend Preview

5/9/2024 1:59:00 PM

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The 12th-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team await the winner of a first round matchup between UT-Dallas and Albright in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament in Baltimore on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

W&L is 20-1 overall this season and earned the ODAC's automatic qualification into the tournament after topping Averett, 5-1, in the conference championship match on Sunday. It marked the program's 21st consecutive ODAC title, and it will be the 29th straight appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament for the Blue and White.

Senior Gabi Moss and sophomore Lauren Long, who were both announced as participants in the 2024 NCAA Division III Singles Championship on Wednesday, lead the Generals into the team championship this season. Moss is 16-2 overall in singles, including 10-0 at No. 2, while Long boasts a 16-4 mark in singles and 12-2 at No. 1. Moss and Long also pair up in doubles play, and they have posted a 13-4 record together this season, with a 10-3 ledger at the top spot.

Overall, W&L holds a 60-34 all-time record in the NCAA Championship. The Generals have appeared in six national title matches, with five coming from 2003-08, and won the team championship during the 2007 campaign in a 5-2 decision over Amherst. Additionally, W&L holds a 28-2 record in their opening round match, with the only two losses coming in its first two tournament appearances (1991, 1994).

The Comets automatically qualified for the tournament with a 5-1 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor in the American Southwest Conference title match, while Albright travels to Baltimore as this year's MAC Commonwealth champions. UT-Dallas will be appearing in the team championship for the fifth straight season and sixth time overall in program history. Last year's run in the tournament began with a 5-2 win over Whitman, before a second-round exit to eventual national champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Lions will be making their first all-time NCAA Tournament appearance this weekend.

The Generals and Lions have never met in women's tennis, while W&L and UT-Dallas have just one all-time head-to-head. That match favored the Blue and White, 9-0, on March 15, 2016 in Lexington.

The first match on Saturday will feature No. 9 Williams and No. 7 Johns Hopkins, with the winner advancing to Sunday's Round of 16 against the winner of the W&L match. Sunday's match is slated for 12:00 p.m.

All matches at Johns Hopkins University this weekend will be streamed if played outdoors, with live scoring provided through the iOnCourt app. If matches are forced to move indoors, there will not be live streams. Live links can be found on the W&L Women's Tennis schedule.
