VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Wrapping up the regular season with an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader, the Washington and Lee University baseball team earned a split at Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday.
GAME ONE | VWU 11, W&L 5
- The Marlins (20-17, 11-11 ODAC) had two runners on in the bottom of the 3rd inning as Jason Caccavaro walked and Thomas Crandall singled. Both would come around to score as Micah Fox roped a single back up the middle to give them a 2-0 lead.
- A few batters later, the Marlins would plate their third run of the game as Samuel Kasprow singled through the left side of the infield. Fox would come around to score the next at-bat to put the home team up 4-0.
- Jacob Jackson kicked off the 4th inning with a double to right field before advancing to third on a wild pitch. He would come around to score on a Campbell Charneco ground out to put the Generals (16-17, 10-12 ODAC) down by three.
- The Marlins would extend their lead to six in the bottom half of the inning as Crandall singled to start the inning before coming around to score on a throwing error. The next at-bat, Michael Burton Jr. would come around to score on a Nick Sylvester single to put VWU up 6-1. The final run of the inning would come a few batters later as Fox scored on a passed ball to put the Marlins up 7-1.
- After Crandall walked and Burton Jr. singled, Fox roped a double down the right field line, driving in both runners to put the Marlins up by eight runs in the bottom of the 5th.
- In the top of the 7th inning, Nick Lagges and John Turner both drew walks to start the inning before Mason Satterfield loaded the bases with a single to right field. Lagges would come around to score on a Zach Senders single to cut the deficit to seven.
- The Marlins would plate their final two runs of the game in the bottom half of the inning as Crandall scored on a Fox single up the middle before Fox came around to score on another passed ball to put VWU up 11-2.
- The Generals put together a late rally in the top of the 9th inning as Lagges kicked off the inning with a solo home run to cut the deficit to eight. After Satterfield singled down the right field line, Senders would reach first and advnace to second on an error by the Marlins right fielder. Both would come around to score on back-to-back singles from Paul Ramseur and Jackson to bring the score to 11-5.
- VWU would bring in Matthew Weber with two runners on and one out to close out the game. Weber would force Charneco to ground into a double play to end game one.
GAME TWO | W&L 3, VWU 2
- Game two did not see much action until the sixth inning where four of the game's five runs were scored. Drew Larsen was hit by a pitch to kick off the inning before Jackson reached first on an error to put runners on the corners for the Generals.
- Ethan Zulueta drove both of them in as he doubled down the left field line to give the Blue and White a 2-0 lead. The next at-bat, Turner would drive in Zulueta on a double of his own, giving the visitors a three run lead.
- The Marlins would get one back in the bottom half of the inning as Burton Jr. blasted a solo home run to cut the deficit to two.
- Virginia Wesleyan would plate a run in the bottom of the ninth on a RBI single from Burton Jr. With the bases loaded and two outs, the Marlins looks to walk it off but Ben Sundell forced a ground out to end the game and secure the series split.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Generals move to 16-17 on the season with a 10-12 mark in ODAC play. W&L secured the eighth spot in the conference tournament this afternoon, marking the fourth straight season with a postseason appearance.
- Ethan Zulueta and Mason Satterfield led the Generals on Saturday with a 3-for-8 (.375) effort at the plate. Zulueta led the team with two RBI while six other batters had one RBI.
- Evan Blair (3-2) was credited with the loss in game one after allowing six runs (one earned) on six hits in three innings pitched. John Benner (3-3) picked up his third win of the season after allowing only one run on four hits with six strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. Ben Sundell secured his third save of the season as he pitched 3.2 innings in relief, allowing one run on four hits with six strikeouts.
VIRGINIA WESLEYAN GAME NOTES
- The Marlins moved to 20-17 on the season and 11-11 in ODAC play, earning the seventh seed in the ODAC tournament.
- Thomas Crandall and Micah Fox were 3-for-4 (.750) at the plate in game one. Fox recorded a game-high six RBI in the win with three runs scored. Fox led the offense in game two with a .500 (2-for-4) batting average.
- Nick Beatty (4-2) earned the win in game one after allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched. Jack McDowell (5-4) was credited with the loss in game two after allowing three runs in six innings of work.

- The Generals will head to the ODAC tournament as the eight seed, they will take on the top seed in the tournament in a three game series starting on Friday, May 3. A game time and location will be announced when made available.
