NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team's late rally fell short on Thursday afternoon as they dropped their final non conference game of the season, 10-9, at No. 11/13 Christopher Newport.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After the first frame was scoreless, the Generals (15-16) scored five runs in the top of the 2nd inning to give themselves an early lead. Jaden Keuhner led off the inning with a single to right field before Frankie Maloof was hit by a pitch.
- Julian Domenech roped a two-RBI single into center field to plate the games' first runs before Paul Ramseur drove him in on a double to left center field. Jacob Jackson put the Generals up 4-0 as he singled up the middle, driving in Ramseur from second base.
- After Drew Larsen singled to put runners on first and second, Ethan Zulueta plated the fifth run of the inning as he singled through the right side of the infield.
- The 11th-ranked Captains (22-8) responded in the bottom of the 4th inning as they scored five runs on five hits and one error to tie the game.
- Both team's offenses' would stall until the top of the 7th when the Blue and White plated two runs on three hits. With two outs in the inning, Keuhner drew a walk before back-to-back singles from John Turner and Mason Satterfield loaded the bases. Zach Senders found a gap in the left side of the infield, driving in Keuhner and Turner to give the Generals a 7-5 lead.
- CNU took their first lead of the afternoon in the bottom half of the frame, rattling off five runs on five hits to take a 10-7 lead heading into the final two innings of play.
- Washington and Lee wasted no time in the 8th inning, Ramseur and Jackson both singled to start the inning before Ramseur came around to score on an error by the Captains' first baseman. Keuhner drove in the General's final run of teh game as he singled through the left side of the infield, driving in Jackson from third base.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Generals dropped their fourth straight game against CNU as they fell to 15-16 on the season.
- Jacob Jackson led the offense this afternoon with a 3-for-5 (.600) effort at the plate with an RBI. Zach Senders and Julian Domenech each had a team-high two RBI in the loss.
- Nathan DeWitte (1-1) was credited with the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits in three innings of work.
CNU GAME NOTES
- The 11th-ranked Captains moved to 22-8 on the season with the win, moving to 8-6 in the all-time series against the Generals.
- Josh Reinhold and Jacob Koenig each had three hits for CNU in the win, both driving in one run. Doc Daniels led the team with two RBI.
- Danny Checkosky (1-1) picked up his first win of the season after pitching one inning, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out one batter. Kyle Lewis secured his fifth save of the season as he struck out five batters in two innings pitched.

- The Blue and White are back in action on Saturday as they wrap up the regular season with a conference doubleheader at Virginia Wesleyan. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. with game two to follow.
