No. 7 Women's Lacrosse Weathers the Storm, Prevails at No. 14 York, 9-7

YORK, Pa. - The seventh-ranked Washington and Lee University women's lacrosse team prevailed in less than ideal weather and field conditions on Saturday afternoon and took down 14th-ranked York College (Pa.) 9-7 in a non-conference contest.

The Generals rattled off three straight goals to wrap up the game and improved to 7-3 overall and York dropped to 2-5 in the IWLCA Top 15 matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It was a game of runs on Saturday with the Generals striking first with four unanswered goals from Julia Thomson, Claire Horner, Emma Marsh and Hanna Bishop
  • Bishops' unassisted tally at the 7:20 mark in the second quarter marked her 25th on the year and put W&L ahead 4-0.
  • York responded by matching the four scores and held W&L scoreless until the third period.
  • Sydney Mentzer buried a shot into the back of the net for the home team with 9:43 to go in the third. Madison Kurland dished out an assist with the player-advantage opportunity to even the score 4 apiece.
  • Alex Petras and Bishop teamed up to take two goals back for the Generals at the 4:42 and 2:51 timestamps in the third, respectively.
  • York halted W&L's momentum with a pair of unanswered tallies to tie it up for the second time at 6-all with 12:51 remaining.
  • The Spartans then earned their first lead of the day with a player-up unassisted tally from the 8-meter from Madison Kurland a minute later.
  • Bishop equalized the score for W&L with 10:40 left on the clock.
  • A Walker McKnight drive put the Blue and White ahead for good. Then Thomson found Horner, as she scored her tenth goal of the season, to give W&L a cushion for the final four minutes of play.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Generals outshot YCP 28-20

  • York turned the ball over 16 times and was perfect with 18 successful clears in 18 attempts.
  • The Generals won the 50-50 ground ball battle with an 18-12 advantage but York was stronger on the circle with 12 draw controls to W&L's eight.
