No. 25 W&L downs Shendandoah, off to first 6-0 start in four years

LEXINGTON, Va. – The 25th-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team posted its second consecutive ODAC shutout to open spring season on Friday, topping Shenandoah.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Like they did a day prior, the Generals (6-0, 5-0 ODAC) dropped just three games total across the three doubles positions. Sophomores Isabella Custard and Riho Iijima posted a shutout at No. 3, followed by an 8-1 win at No. 2 from senior Margaret Carlton and sophomore Grace Lorenz. Sophomore Lauren Long and senior Gabi Moss wrapped up the doubles sweep with an 8-2 decision at the top spot.

Custard cruised at No. 4 singles to post the first singles point of the match, downing Allison Cherwien by a 6-1, 6-0 score. Lorenz finished next with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3, while Iijima had little trouble at No. 3 in a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Ariella Stepleman.

Long stayed at the top spot for singles play and, after grinding out a 6-4 win in the first set, shut Tanea Spruill out in the second set. Senior Kaitlyn Chalker picked up action on Court 4 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory, and junior Meagan Donovan completed the team shutout with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6.

NOTEWORTHY POINTS:
Five of W&L's six wins this season have come in shutout fashion, with their other win coming via an 8-1 decision against Randolph. In dual match play this season, W&L players own a combined 18-0 record in doubles and a 35-1 mark in singles.

UP NEXT:
The Generals will return to the courts next Friday, February 23, with a 4:00 p.m. start against No. 34 Christopher Newport.
