No. 25 W&L Downs No. 33 CNU, improves to 7-0 with sixth shutout of season

LEXINGTON, Va. – The 25th-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team continued its hot start to the season with a dominant 9-0 win over No. 33 Christopher Newport on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Sophomore Lauren Long and senior Gabi Moss cruised at the top doubles position, defeating Tessa Trate and Raine Weis, the 17th-ranked doubles duo in the nation and No. 4 in the region, by an 8-2 score. Senior Izzy Koziol and first-year Haley Stoltz breezed by Megan Bauer and Kylie Schaefer, 8-3, at No. 3, while senior Margaret Carlton and sophomore Grace Lorenz kept the shutout alive by turning a 4-2 deficit into an 8-5 win at No. 3.

Sophomore Annie Jennings highlighted singles play for the Blue and White, dropping just two games in her first set against Mia Linam at No. 3, before claiming the win with a 6-0 score in the second set. Long dispatched Weis at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-3, and sophomore Riho Iijima made quick work of Schaefer at No. 6, 6-3, 6-0.

Lorenz and Moss had tougher battles, but also won in straight sets. Lorenz defeated Samantha Robertson, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 4, while Moss downed Trate in a second-set tiebreak, 7-4, to win her match, 6-3, 7-6. Stoltz completed the team shutout at No. 5, and also needed a comeback effort. Kiersten Chang won the first set, 6-4, but Stoltz forced a 10-point breaker with a 6-3 win in set two. Stoltz then outscored Chang, 10-4, to close the win.
