COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – First-year
Connor Amorosi led the charge with 25 points to help the Washington and Lee men's basketball team to a 75-64 win over Immaculata to close out the Ursinus Bear Bash Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Immaculata (0-2) held an early 11-5 lead, as the Mighty Macs held the Generals (1-1) to just one made field goal over the first eight and a half minutes of play. Senior
Thomas Feigin then sank a three-point shot to get the W&L offense going, but Immaculata kept the pace and remained out in front by four points with seven minutes left in the half.
With 7:03 left before halftime, Feigin hit another shot from beyond the arc to kickstart a 14-2 Generals run to flip the game into their favor, 30-22, with 3:15 left. Junior
John Loughlin connected on two threes for a team-best six points during the run. The Mighty Macs recovered, however, and outscored W&L 8-6 the rest of the half to trail, 36-30, heading into the break.
Amorosi outscored Immaculata himself, 8-7, over the first four minutes of the second half, before the two teams traded seven points each to leave W&L ahead, 50-47, with 12 minutes to play. Amorosi then made his way to the free throw line for two freebies for the start of nine straight W&L points and a 13-2 run overall to balloon the lead to 63-49. Over the final eight minutes of play, the Mighty Macs came no closer than 10 points down, while the Generals led by as many as 16 points (71-55).
TOP PERFORMERS:
Amorosi scored 17 of his team-high 25 points in the second half in his collegiate debut. He shot 8-of-17 from the floor and made 9-of-11 free throws, while adding eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Feigin followed with 15 points and six boards, and he shot 5-of-10 overall, including 4-of-7 from long range. Junior
Colin Ryan contributed 13 points and eight rebounds, Loughlin finished with 11 points (2-3 FG, 5-7 FT) and sophomore
Conor Roberton had eight points and a team-best five assists.
Dinero Washington led the Might Macs' offense with 21 points on 8-of-18 shooting overall. John Proctor tallied 12 points on 6-of-14 shooting, while John Flood pulled down a team-best seven rebounds in 35 minutes.
TEAM STATS:
The Blue and White made 45.5 percent (25-55) of its shots from the field to Immaculata's 40.9 percent (27-66). W&L also held a decided advantage on free throws, finishing 19-of-29 from the line in the game while Immaculata only went to the line six times and made three.
Other statistical advantages held by the Generals included total rebounds (46-31), offensive rebounds (14-8), second-chance points (11-9), bench points (26-23) and points in the paint (34-28). The Mighty Macs finished the game with only seven turnovers and outpaced W&L, 16-4, in points off turnovers.
