No. 11 Generals Claim Program's First Regional Championship with 3-0 Win over CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The 11th-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team swept Christopher Newport University in straight sets to win the Regional Championship for the first time in program history on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT (W&L, 3-0 | 27-25, 25-19, 25-15)
  • Alyssa Dozier of CNU opened the match with a kill, but Katie Stone and Avery Myers responded with three consecutive kills to give the Blue and White an early two-point lead. Both teams traded points until Riley Debiec notched a kill and Grace Mitchener blocked an Alli Pratt attack, putting W&L up 8-4.
  • CNU answered with a 6-2 run, tying the match at ten with a Megan James kill and two blocks. Three straight errors by the Captains gave the Blue and White a 13-10 lead, but CNU surged ahead with an 8-1 run to take an 18-14 advantage. Unfazed, the Blue and White countered with a 6-1 run to reclaim a 20-19 lead. The rally featured a kill from Debiec, a Vivi Vasquez service ace, and a block by Mitchener and Allie Buchholz.
  • The Captains reached set point after a Megan James kill, but the Generals rattled off three straight points, thanks to two kills from Myers, to take a 25-24 lead. Dozier tied the set at 25, but back-to-back kills by Debiec and Myers secured a thrilling 27-25 set one victory for W&L.
  • The second set saw both teams exchanging runs early. A kill from Debiec and a block by Mitchener and Debiec highlighted a 3-0 run that put the Generals ahead 13-12. However, CNU responded with two kills and a service ace to take a two-point lead. The Blue and White answered with a 5-1 run to jump ahead 18-16, a stretch that featured kills from Debiec, Emily Schellenberg, Mitchener, and K. Stone.
  • W&L closed out the second set with a commanding 7-2 run to secure a 25-19 win. The final stretch included four kills from Myers, one from Emery Goerig, and service aces by Schellenberg and Mitchener.
  • In the third set, the Captains took an early 2-1 lead, but the Generals responded with a 5-2 run, powered by two kills from Myers and a solo block from Debiec, to go up 5-2. Two points later, the Blue and White extended their lead with a 5-1 run, featuring two kills from Debiec, one from Mitchener, and a solo block from Buchholz.
  • After exchanging points in the middle of the set, Mitchener sparked a 7-1 run with back-to-back kills, propelling the Blue and White to a commanding 23-12 lead. The run also included kills from Schellenberg and K. Stone and a Buchholz service ace.
  • Following two points from the Captains, Goerig finished a Buchholz assist to put the Generals up by ten. Buchholz delivered a perfect pass across the court to Myers, who secured the final kill of the match and the Generals first Regional Championship in program history.
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Myers matched a career-high with 19 kills on 42 attempts, hitting .333, while digging out 10 attacks for her 15th double-double of the season. Samantha Dorn led CNU with 12 kills on 32 attempts, finishing with a .156 hitting percentage.
  • Buchholz recorded a match-high 40 assists, marking her second consecutive match and eighth overall with 40 or more assists. Alyssa Vitale led the Captains with 20 assists, while Kensie Price added 15 in a losing effort.
  • Mitchener led all players with 19 digs, while Vasquez (13) and Myers (10) also recorded double-digit digs. Vasquez's 13 digs bring her season total to 662, tying the single-season record set by Lauren Edmonson in 2006. Noelle Starr led CNU with 17 digs, and Megan James added 10.
  • Mitchener also led the match with two service aces, while Buchholz, Vasquez, and Schellenberg each contributed one. Alli Pratt posted a match-high four blocks for CNU, while Debiec and Mitchener led the Blue and White with three blocks apiece.

W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Generals improved to 35-2 on the season, capturing their first Regional Championship in program history. The three wins this weekend mark the most victories in a single NCAA Tournament run for the program, while their 35 wins tie the single-season record.
  • The Blue and White led in five of the six team categories, including aces (5), assists (47), and digs (60). Offensively, they recorded 48 kills on 129 attempts with only 13 errors, achieving a .271 hitting percentage. The team posted a match-high .341 hitting percentage in the second set.
  • W&L's defense effectively contained CNU's high-powered offense, allowing only 39 kills and holding the Captains to a .156 hitting percentage. In the third and final set, the Generals forced CNU to hit just .060.
  • This win marked head coach Bryan Snyder's 650th career win with the Blue and White. Snyder has the led the program to a 650-204 (.761) record since taking over in 2000. He now holds an overall record of 691-229 (.751) over his 27 year career which ranks 7th among active Division III head coaches.
