DANVILLE, Va. – A five-goal second half highlighted the 13th-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team's 6-0 win over Averett on Wednesday night to increase the team's winning streak to eight games.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
W&L (8-1, 3-0 ODAC) first-year
Megan Zimmerman opened the scoring in the 21st minute when she tapped in a cross inside the back post from senior
Ann Riley Huber and sophomore
Amelia Manke. Leading by a 1-0 score entering the second half, the Blue and White needed just 25 seconds into the new period to get on the board again, as sophomore
Emily Burke fed junior
Sophie Berman inside the box for the score.
Berman struck again in the 58th minute for her third goal of the season and the 3-0 lead, before junior
Helen Otteni extended the lead to four goals when she corralled a loose ball in the box and fired it into the net for her first goal of the season.
The Generals then tacked on two late goals to cement their eighth consecutive win. Senior
Sarah Lathrop scored on a penalty kick in the 84th minute, followed by an
Aubrey Dunbar goal in the 86th minute off a long through ball from first-year
Millie Rush.
TOP PERFORMERS:
Zimmerman notched her team-high fifth goal of the season to open the contest, while Berman is now up to three this season with her brace. Otteni's and Lathrop's goals were their firsts of the season, and Dunbar's goal was her second of the campaign. Huber ended the night with two assists, while Manke, Burke, Rush and Hecker all collected one assist each.
Junior
Abby Groff and first-year
Kate McEnroe combined for the shutout, with Groff making the lone save required of the two. Groff played the first 62:25, while McEnroe finished out the final 27:35.
NOTEWORTHY POINTS:
The 6-0 W&L win on Wednesday night improved the team's all-time record against Averett to 6-0. The Generals have outscored the Cougars 32-0 in the all-time series, with Wednesday's margin tying for the second-largest in the matchup history.
TEAM STATS:
W&L outshot Averett by a final total of 38-1, spreading that margin from 22-1 in the first half to 16-0 in the second half. The Generals also earned 12 corner kicks on the night and conceded none.

The Generals will return to the pitch on Saturday when they travel to Salem, Va., to take on Roanoke at 1:00 p.m.
