SANDESTIN, Fla. – The Washington and Lee University men's golf team finished the first round of the 2024 Golfweek October Classic at Raven Golf Club in second place, just one stroke behind Sewanee. The Generals posted a team score of -10 (274) on the par-71, 6,623-yard course.
Team Standings (Top 3):
- No. 21 Sewanee: -11 (273)
- No. 6 Washington & Lee: -10 (274)
- No. 5 Oglethorpe: -7 (277)
Player Highlights:
- Jonathan McEwen: Tied for third at -4, showing consistent play across the par-4 and par-3 holes, averaging 3.67 (-3) on par 4s.
- Charlie Krasnewich: Tied for 12th at -3, Krasnewich averaged 2.60 (-2) on par 3s and recorded five birdies and one eagle.
- Elias Malakoff: Tied for 17th at -2 and averaged 3.78 (-2) on par 4s.
- Timothy Kaufman: Tied for 23rd at -1, the rookie was steady on par 4s and tallied five birdies.
- Will Braxton: Tied for 82nd at +4.
By the Numbers:
- Par 3s: W&L averaged 2.96 (-1) on par 3s.
- Par 4s: The Generals led the field, averaging 3.87 (-6).
- Par 5s: W&L averaged 5.05 (+1).
- Birdies: W&L recorded 23 birdies, tied for the lead with Lynchburg.
- Eagles: W&L and Bethel University each scored one eagle - 1 eagle. Charlie Krasnewich drained the eagle on the 15th hole, a 298-yard par 4.
The Generals look to build on their solid start in the next round, aiming to overtake Sewanee at the top of the leaderboard and will tee off at 9:10 a.m tomorrow morning.
