No. 7 Men's Golf Finishes Second at Gate City Invitational with Record-Breaking Performance

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The seventh-ranked Washington and Lee University men's golf team posted a record-breaking performance at the Gate City Invitational, finishing second with a team score of 280-279-282—841 (-23).

The Generals opened strong with -8 in the first round, placing them second overall. They surged into the lead after a -9 second round, despite play being suspended due to darkness.

Entering the final round at -17, W&L led top-ranked Methodist, but the Monarchs posted a 274 (-14) final round to overtake W&L on the team leaderboard.

Player Summaries

  • Jonathan McEwen (73-63-71—207) climbed the leaderboard in the final round to finish tied for 5th at -9. The Sophomore recorded 15 birdies and an eagle and was named All-Tournament by the Gate City hosts.
  • Will Braxton (67-69-71—207) finished tied for 17th at -4 overall. Braxton posted a stellar 67 (-5) in the opening round and drained 10 birdies and two par-5 eagles over the two days.
  • Charlie Krasnewich (71-58-75—204) led W&L through 54 holes and entered the final round in third place. He finished tied for 17th at -4, dropping 14 positions. His second-round score of 66 was the lowest round for the Generals, and he recorded 13 birdies and one eagle over the two days.
  • Elias Malakoff (70-75-70—212) jumped 20 positions on the final day, thanks to a two-under performance, finishing tied for 23rd at -1. Malakoff recorded 11 birdies total.
  • Timothy Kaufman (72-72-74—218) finished 45th at +2, with par finishes in the first two rounds and nine birdies across the tournament.

By the Numbers:

Across the board, W&L recorded just five individual rounds over par. Of the 12 rounds contributing to the team score, only two were worse than par and totaled four strokes over.

The Generals' -23 performance shattered their previous team record, surpassing the 17-under mark set at the 2024 Savannah Invitational hosted by Berry at Savannah Harbor Golf Club.

W&L finished ahead of No. 3 Emory (-18), No. 6 Huntingdon (-13), and No. 2 Carnegie Mellon (-6).
