LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's basketball team rallied twice in the second half against eighth-ranked Guilford, but the Quakers held off the final push, as the Generals fell by a 65-54 final at home on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
A Tyler Dearman floater pushed the Guilford (16-2, 7-2 ODAC) lead up to 33-25 to start the second half, but the Generals (10-7, 4-4 ODAC) scored the next seven points to trail by only one. The contest remained close, and an
A.J. Thomas triple for the Blue and White tied things up, 42-42, at the 12:33 mark, but Guilford answered with an 8-0 run to rebuild a lead.
The Generals continued to battle, as they held the Quakers to just three points over the next five minutes, while scoring eight to cut their deficit down to 53-50 with 3:43 left. Guilford's defense then tightened up and held the Blue and White to four points for the rest of the game, while scoring 12 on offense, to bring about the final total.
Guilford built up an early 18-5 lead on the strength of 11 points from Dearman and 7-of-12 shooting overall as a team. W&L senior
Drew Harrell then connected on a three, as the Generals steadily reduced their deficit with an 18-7 run across nearly 10 minutes of game time. That stretch left the Quakers ahead, 25-23, at the 3:22 mark, but Guilford went on to score the next six points to give itself a 31-25 halftime lead.
