LEXINGTON, Va. – A four-goal second half highlighted the game, but both teams split the scores as the Washington and Lee women's soccer team tied, 2-2, with Shenandoah on Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The contest remained scoreless through the first half, an opening 45 minutes that saw the Generals (5-0-2, 1-0-1 ODAC) accumulate a 9-3 lead in total shots. In the 49th minute, W&L earned a corner kick that was taken by senior
Cameron Grainger. Her in-swinging cross was punched out of the goal box by the SU (5-2-2, 0-1-1 ODAC) keeper, but came right to sophomore
Sophie Berman just outside. Berman then hit a rocket just under the cross bar to give the Generals the initial lead.
The Hornets quickly tied the game just under five minutes later on a corner kick of their own. Emily Dendis took the kick and sent a cross towards the back post, where the ball was deflected in by the W&L defense for an own goal. The Generals regained a one-goal advantage in the 61st minute, when sophomore
Sarah Zimmerman laid a pass off to her left for senior
Emma Mansfield. Mansfield took a shot from the right side towards the right post, and the ball had just enough power to make it over the keeper's reach and inside the post for the goal.
Shenandoah managed to equalize yet again in the 69th minute when Lauren Duffy found Peyton Lubinsky for a close-range shot on the right side of the six-yard box.
The Generals came close to a third goal in the 83rd minute on a shot taken from the left side by Berman, but her attempt hit off the crossbar and was cleared from danger.
TOP PERFORMERS:
Berman's goal marked her third of the season, while Mansfield tallied her second score of the campaign. Zimmerman got an assist on the Mansfield goal, her second this year, while sophomore
Helen Otteni fired a game-high seven shots, with three on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Sydney Smith made one save in the game, as the W&L defense limited the SU offense to just five shots and two on goal.
For the Hornets, Lubinsky found the back of the net on her only shot of the night. Kayla Jenkins was the lone road player to take multiple shots (2), and keeper Karissa Dominick finished the contest with eight saves across the 90 minutes of play.
TEAM STATS:
After the 9-3 W&L lead in shots in the first half, the Generals expanded that to a final count of 28-5 with a 19-2 shot advantage in the second half. The Blue and White earned four corner kicks in both halves and conceded five in the game.
