FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Sophomore
Lauren Long won another two singles matches on Sunday to play her way into the semifinals in the Championship Singles bracket to highlight the Washington and Lee women's tennis team's second day at the ITA Southeast Region Championships.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM DAY 2:
Long began her day in the singles draw with a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 win over Kamila Wong of Johns Hopkins in the Round of 16. She then had to overcome a one-set deficit to JHU's Jay Xiao in the quarterfinals, but won the second set by a 6-1 score after dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-2). Long and Xiao played a close third-set tiebreak, but Long outlasted Xiao by a 10-8 score.
Senior
Gabi Moss and sophomore
Annie Jennings were also in action in the singles bracket on Sunday. Moss advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Sophia Kim of Johns Hopkins, 6-3, 6-1, while Jennings dropped her Round of 16 contest in straight sets. Moss then fell in the quarterfinals to Hopkins' Mary Beth Hurley, 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles play, Long and Moss opened the day with an 8-4 win in the Round of 16 over Christopher Newport's Kiersten Chang and Samantha Robertson. The W&L duo saw their doubles run come to an end in the quarterfinals, however, with an 8-6 final against Anna Chow and Danna Taylor of Carnegie Mellon.
LOOKING AHEAD TO MONDAY:
Long will be making her first appearance in the singles semifinals of the ITA Southeast Regional Tournament, after she and
Margaret Carlton appeared in the doubles semifinals a season ago. Long will face Carnegie Mellon's Divya Venkatarama in Monday's semifinal round. Both Long and Venkatarama lost in the singles Round of 16 last season, with Venkatarama's loss coming to W&L's
Izzy Koziol.
The winner in the semifinal round will not only secure a spot in the championship match, but will also punch their ticket to the ITA Cup in Rome, Ga. The semifinal match between Long and Venkatarama will get underway on Monday around 11:30 a.m.
