FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's tennis team opened play at the 2023 ITA Southeast Region Championships on Saturday and saw three singles players and two doubles teams advance to the Round of 16.

Gabi Moss received a bye into Sunday's Round of 16, while sophomore
Annie Jennings and first-year
Haley Stoltz won their Round of 32 match by an 8-4 score over Sweet Briar's Alex Guilarte and Ana Patino.
In singles, W&L will be sending Long, Moss and Jennings to the Round of 16 on Sunday after all three won twice on Saturday. Just as in doubles, Long received a first-round bye in the Round of 64, before downing Carnegie Mellon's Anna Chow in straight sets (6-3, 7-5). Moss cruised to a pair of straight-set wins, topping UMW's Jacey Copeland, 6-1, 6-1, and Christopher Newport's Samantha Robertson, 6-1, 6-4.
Jennings advanced to the Round of 32 after a convincing 6-2, 6-0 win over Ainika Hou of CMU. She then battled Mary Washington's Addison Felts to three sets and emerged as the victor. Jennings won the first set, 6-1, dropped the second set by a 6-2 score and secured the win with a 10-7 score in a third-set tiebreak.
Other W&L winners on the first day included senior
Izzy Koziol and sophomore
Grace Lorenz. Koziol won by a 6-4, 6-0 score against Haverford's Rachael Fitzgerald before falling to CMU's Danna Taylor, 6-1, 6-1, in the Round of 32. Lorenz comfortably defeated Stevens' Stephanie Untermeyer, 6-0, 6-3, but also fell in the next round (7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-6)) after going three sets with Jay Xiao of Johns Hopkins.
