LEXINGTON, Va. – In the final Saturday home game of the regular season, the No. 8 Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team celebrated Senior Day with a 26-1 win over Randolph.
Senior
Hudson Pokorny (Darien, Conn. / Darien) got the festivities started early with an assist on each of the first three goals of the game, all to a different scorer. Pokorny added two goals in the first quarter as well, on top of one more assist for a six-point quarter. Junior
Alex Brown (Norwalk, Conn. / Taft School) and sophomore
Hillis Burns (Louisville, Ky. / St. Xavier) also scored twice for the Generals (12-4, 6-2 ODAC), with Burns adding an assist, in a 9-0 first quarter.
By the end of the second quarter, W&L had built up an 18-0 lead after nine more goals. First-years
Ben Irmscher (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Catholic) and
James Haley (Westfield, N.J. / Westfield) led the offensive efforts with two goals each and senior
Adam Lamberti (Bel Air, Md. / McDonogh) assisted on a pair of goals in the frame as well. Junior
Justin Le (San Jose, Calif. / Bellarmine Prep), who finished with a career-high five goals, scored the team's final goal of the second quarter, and he added three of the team's next four goals spanning into the fourth (22-0).
Le added his fifth goal of the game with 4:36 remaining and Irmscher scored twice more in the stanza, including the team's final goal of the game with 3:56 left.
Randolph's (1-13, 0-7 ODAC) Michael Baldwin was responsible for the WildCats' lone goal, which came off a feed from Leyton Brightly with 12.4 seconds remaining.
Pokorny's four assists catapulted him into a tie with Bryan Chasney '74 for second place on the program's single-season assists list. Pokorny needs just three more helpers to break Don Carroll's '76 single-season record of 45, and Pokorny can also tie Carroll's 85 points during the 1975 season for fifth most in a season with seven more points. Over the last six games, Pokorny has logged 43 points (7.2 per game), with at least six in each contest, on 14 goals and 29 assists.
Le's five goals led the team, and his five points were second most on the day, while Irmscher and Haley each finished with four points. All of Irmscher's points came on goals and Haley scored three times with one assist. The Generals finished the game with 17 assists and 43 total points, with 14 different goal scorers and 23 different point scorers.
The Generals won an even 90 percent of their face-offs in the game, with junior
Nick Tussing (Owings Mills, Md. / Gilman) claiming a high of 12 wins on 14 attempts. Junior
Will Bou (Chevy Chase, Md. / Landon) was a perfect 9-for-9 at the X and senior
Matt Gallagher (Lynchburg, Va. / E.C. Glass), who also assisted on a goal, went 6-of-7. In total, the W&L face-off trio went 27-of-30 and picked up 15 ground balls.
Irmscher had a strong all-around day as his four goals went alongside five ground balls and a team-best three caused turnovers. Haley added three ground balls and two caused turnovers to his four points and first-year
Sam Bassett (Asheville, N.C. / Christ School) (2) rounded out the W&L players with multiple caused turnovers.
In goal, four Generals played one quarter each. Senior
Warren Seeds (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) (7-1) got the start and made one save to earn the win. First-year
Ryan Boyd (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham), junior
Ryan Aljader (Levittown, N.Y. / Chaminade) and sophomore
Keene Cornick (Alexandria, Va. / St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) covered the final three periods and made combined for three saves.
Baldwin's goal for the WildCats came on his only shot of the game. Ethan Caldwell led the Randolph offense with three attempts and one on goal, in addition to collecting two ground balls. CJ Berry and Tom Stahler each grabbed a team-high five ground balls, as Berry added two of Randolph's three caused turnovers.
In goal, Adam Ulffers (1-12) played all 60 minutes in the losing effort and made 16 saves.
W&L finished the game with a 65-9 margin in total shot attempts, with a 42-5 mark in shots on goal. The Blue and White caused 14 of Randolph's 23 total turnovers in the game, allowed the WildCats successful clears on just 13-of-25 attempts and picked up 65 ground balls to Randolph's 22.
The Generals will close out the 2023 regular season in their next contest, a 7:00 pm home start against Shenandoah.
