Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

No. 8 Generals extend winning streak to five at Grove City, 20-10

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The eighth-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team used a 5-0 run in the third quarter to pull away from Grove City for good in a 20-10 road win on Friday.

The Generals (11-4) led by an 11-5 margin coming into the second half, and their 5-0 third-quarter advantage helped put the game out of reach. Senior Hudson Pokorny (Darien, Conn. / Darien) led the team with two goals in the quarter, the first and last, while sophomore Jack Elliott (Suffolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy) and junior Alex Brown (Norwalk, Conn. / Taft School) each had one goal and one assist in the frame.

The Wolverines (6-8) saw their most success in the fourth quarter with five goals, including a string of three straight which spanned from 9:54 to 7:21 remaining in the game. That flurry cut the GC deficit to 17-9, but the Generals added three of the game's final four scores, including each of the last two by junior A.J. Levitt (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. / The Benjamin School).

Grove City scored the contest's first goal at 12:46 of the first, but the Generals scored five of the next six, with two coming from junior Michael Ott (West Newbury, Mass. / St. John's Prep), to gain a 5-2 advantage at the 20-second mark of the opening frame. After a goal was scored by GC's Zachary Hougan in the final seconds of the first, W&L put another 5-1 run together in the second quarter to pad its lead to 10-4. Pokorny was a driving force during the second 5-1 run, with two goals and an assist.

Pokorny finished the day with seven points on four goals and three assists, and he now has 37 points (12 goals, 25 assists) in his last five games. Additionally, his three assists boosted his season total to 39, which is in a four-way tie for the third most in a season in program history, most recently tied by Hudson Hamill '20 during the 2019 campaign.

Other offensive leaders for the Blue and White included Ott, who scored a game-high five goals to log his fourth five-point outing in the last five games, as well as Elliott, Brown and Schnorr, who all finished with three points on two goals and an assist.

W&L won 23-of-30 face-offs on the day, and saw strong performances from all three face-off men. Senior Matt Gallagher (Lynchburg, Va. / E.C. Glass) went 11-of-14 (.786), junior Will Bou (Chevy Chase, Md. / Landon) won 9-of-13 (.692) and junior Nick Tussing (Owings Mills, Md. / Gilman) was 3-for-3. In goal, senior Warren Seeds (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) made 10 saves in all 60 minutes of action.

Sophomores Riley Albregts (Mountain Lakes, N.J. / Mountain Lakes) and Brian Barringer (Sudbury, Mass. / Lincoln Sudbury Regional) and first-years Colin Beatty (Summit, N.J. / Summit) and Elliot Cohen (Stamford, Conn. / Taft School) all tied for the team high with four ground balls. Pokorny also added three ground balls to his line to match senior Harris Hubbard (Madison, Miss. / Highland Park (Texas)).

For the Wolverines, Brett Gladstone (two goals, two assists) and Kobi Bui (three goals, one assist) led the offense with four points apiece, while Hougan finished with three points on three goals. Cody Adams and Addison Bennett caused a game-high three turnovers each, with three ground balls to Adams and two to Bennett. Danny Stone took the loss in goal after he made just five saves in the first half. Jack Petit played the second half between the pipes and stopped 11 shots.

W&L nearly doubled Grove City's shot output, ending the game at a mark of 61-32 and 36-20 in attempts on goal. The Generals went 11-for-11 on their clear attempts in the second half and picked up 48 ground balls (10 or more in each quarter) to 29 for the Wolverines.

The Generals will return home on Saturday for a 2:00 pm showdown against Randolph. The game also marks Senior Day for the men's lacrosse program, which will take place on the field 10 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
