No. 22 W&L falters at No. 33 UMW, 5-4

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The 22nd-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team saw its eight-match winning streak come to an end in a narrow 5-4 loss at No. 33 Mary Washington on Wednesday.

The Eagles (8-9) claimed the early lead after doubles, 2-1, with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. First-years Riho Iijima (Portland, Ore. / Westview) and Grace Lorenz (Oklahoma City, Okla. / Epic Charter Schools) were victorious for the Blue and White at No. 3, 8-1, over Riley Smith and Emily Beckner.

The two teams split the six singles matches to yield the final team score, but it took until the fifth singles match to end to decide the match. UMW's Amanda Hagino clinched the team win at No. 2 over W&L junior Gabi Moss (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Chaparral), 7-5, 6-4.

W&L moved in front, 3-2, after the first two singles matches ended, which came via wins from Iijima at No. 5, 6-0, 7-5, and junior Margaret Carlton (Matthews, N.C. / Charlotte Christian), 6-1, 6-1, at No. 6. Hana Kimmey and Rebecca Stepleman of UMW then won at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, and did so in straight sets ahead of Hagino's win.

W&L first-year Lauren Long (Carmel, Ind. / Park Tudor) rounded out the singles competitors, and she prevailed in three sets over Abby Moghtader by a final of 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

The Generals have Thursday off and will be back in play on Friday at 2:00 pm at Washington College (Md.).
