LEXINGTON, Va. – The 22nd-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team closed out ODAC competition for the 2022-23 regular season on Tuesday with a 7-2 win over Sweet Briar.
The Generals (14-4, 10-0 ODAC) locked up the top overall seed for the ODAC Tournament with the win and will host the No. 8 seed in the tournament quarterfinals next Tuesday. The Vixens suffer their first ODAC loss of the season (8-1) and have a 14-7 overall record.
First-years
Grace Lorenz (Oklahoma City, Okla. / Epic Charter Schools) and
Riho Iijima (Portland, Ore. / Westview) cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles to open the match, but the Vixens gained a team point at No. 2 with an 8-7 (7-4) win by Sofia Andrade and Ana Patino. First-year
Lauren Long (Carmel, Ind. / Park Tudor) and junior
Gabi Moss (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Chaparral) rounded out doubles play and helped W&L seize momentum with an 8-7 (7-4) victory.
The Generals then went on to win 5-of-6 singles matches, four of which were straight-set victories. Moss and Iijima each posted 6-0, 6-1 wins at No. 2 and No. 6, respectively, while Lorenz skated to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4. Koziol shut Allison Wandling out in the first set at No. 3, before taking the second set by a 6-4 margin.
Long claimed the final W&L team point at the top singles position, rebounding for a three-set win after falling in the first set, 6-4, to de Souza. Long took the second set, 7-5, before winning 10-of-13 points in the third.
The Generals will be on the road for their final three matches of the regular season, beginning with a 3:00 pm match on Wednesday at No. 33 Mary Washington.
