SALEM, Va. – The eighth-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team held off a late rally from Roanoke to claim victory, 16-12, on Tuesday and help head coach
Gene McCabe earn his 250th career coaching win.
The win improves the Generals to 10-4 overall and 5-2 in ODAC play, while the Maroons fall to 10-6 overall and 6-2 in the conference. McCabe, now in his 22nd season as a collegiate head coach, is 250-116 (.683) in his coaching career, with 196 wins at the helm of the W&L men's lacrosse program.
With W&L ahead by a 14-6 score with 7:16 remaining in the third quarter, Roanoke pounced for five straight goals until 12:09 remained in regulation to cut the game back to a three-goal difference. During the run, Luke Kammerman scored three times, and Julian Kammerman added an assist.
Sophomore
Hillis Burns (Louisville, Ky. / St. Xavier) then responded with his fourth goal of the game with 10:47 remaining, followed by another score from senior
Will Schnorr (Paoli, Pa. / Conestoga) with 9:19 left. Noah Goad notched the Maroons' 12th goal of the game with 8:40 to play, but the Blue and White held Roanoke off the board for the remainder of the night to hang on for the win.
Burns scored W&L's first two goals of the game in a span of just 39 seconds in the first quarter, but was quickly answered by two Roanoke goals to tie the game, 2-2, with 11:14 left in the opening quarter. The Generals then went on a 6-1 run, with two assists from senior
Hudson Pokorny (Darien, Conn. / Darien) and goals from six different Generals, to build up an 8-3 lead at the 12:56 mark of the second quarter.
After a Roanoke Kammerman goal, two separate 3-0 runs for W&L, sandwiched around back-to-back Maroons goals, left the Blue and White ahead by their 14-6 count leading into the late Roanoke rally.
Burns and Pokorny racked up six points each; Burns scored four times and added two assists to one goal and five assists for Pokorny. Burns has tallied at least three points in all 10 of his appearances this season, with four games of at least six points. Pokorny continued his hot play and now has 30 points (8 goals, 22 assists) in the last four games. Additionally, Pokorny now has 36 assists this season, just 10 shy of breaking the single-season record (Don Carroll, 1975).
W&L won 19-of-32 (.594) face-offs, led by junior
Will Bou (Chevy Chase, Md. / Landon), who went 15-of-24 with eight ground balls. Senior
Boots Lackey (Alexandria, Va. / The Heights School) and sophomore
Brian Barringer (Sudbury, Mass. / Lincoln Sudbury Regional) both caused two turnovers to lead the W&L defense, Lackey also picked up three ground balls and Barringer scooped up four. Junior
Jed Heald (Manchester, N.H. / Phillips Academy Andover (Mass.)) added four ground balls and a caused turnover and first-year
Colin Beatty (Summit, N.J. / Summit) collected five ground balls.
In goal, senior
Warren Seeds (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) played all 60 minutes and made 16 saves to earn the win.
For the Maroons, Luke Kammerman totaled six points on five goals and an assist, while Julian Kammerman (one goal, two assists) and Goad (three goals) both finished with three points. Luke Kammerman also tied for the team high with John Dias with five ground balls. Between the pipes, Alex Feuer played the duration of the game and stopped 16 shots in the losing effort.
W&L edged the Maroons by a 49-42 margin in total shot attempts on the day, committed one less turnover than Roanoke and picked up six more ground balls (44-38) than the hosts.
The Generals will be on the road for their third straight game on Friday, and for the final time this season in non-conference play, when they travel to western Pennsylvania for a 3:00 pm against Grove City.
