NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The 25th-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team picked up a key nonconference win on Saturday in a 9-0 sweep of 33rd-ranked Christopher Newport.
The Generals improve to 11-4 overall with the win, while the Captains fall to 3-9 overall with the loss. The 9-0 win for W&L is the first such result in the all-time series since the teams' first all-time meeting on March 22, 2014.
W&L posted two 8-4 wins in doubles play, coming from juniors
Margaret Carlton (Matthews, N.C. / Charlotte Christian) and
Izzy Koziol (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) at No. 2 and first-years
Grace Lorenz (Oklahoma City, Okla. / Epic Charter Schools) and
Riho Iijima (Portland, Ore. / Westview) at No. 3. The Captains nearly claimed a point at No. 1, but first-year
Lauren Long (Carmel, Ind. / Park Tudor) and junior

Long (1) and Iijima (6) logged the largest margins of victory in singles by way of 6-3, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-3 wins, respectively. Moss won at No. 2, 6-1, 6-3, over Trate, while Lorenz dropped just one additional game in a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at No. 4. Koziol battled with Mia Linam at No. 3, but she prevailed by a 6-4, 7-5 final.

The Generals will play their third match in three days on Sunday, when they step back into ODAC competition for a 10:00 am start against Virginia Wesleyan.
