LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 25 Washington and Lee women's tennis team improved to 10-4 overall and 7-0 in the ODAC with a 9-0 sweep of Averett on Friday.
The Generals dropped a combined six games in the three doubles matches, with first-years
Riho Iijima (Portland, Ore. / Westview) and
Grace Lorenz (Oklahoma City, Okla. / Epic Charter Schools) posting the largest win at No. 3, 8-1. Juniors
Margaret Carlton (Matthews, N.C. / Charlotte Christian) and
Izzy Koziol (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) defeated Alejandra Garcia and Paula Ryhsen, 8-2, at No. 2, and first-year
Lauren Long (Carmel, Ind. / Park Tudor) and junior
Gabi Moss (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Chaparral) won, 8-3, over Keira Gunning and Brenda Poulakidas at the top spot.
W&L won all six singles matches in straight sets. Iijima shut Amelie Brune out, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5, while Koziol (No. 3, 6-2, 6-0) and Lorenz (No. 4, 6-1, 6-1) surrendered just two games each. Moss won, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 and Long won by a 6-3, 6-2 score over Gunning at No. 1. First-year
Jordan Kach (Warrenton, Va. / Seton School) wrapped up the win at No. 6, and defeated Daniela Poulakidas, 7-4, in a second-set tiebreak to prevail, 6-4, 7-6.
The Generals will hit the road on Saturday for a 2:00 pm start against No. 33 Christopher Newport in their next match.
