Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

No. 2 Women's Lacrosse Falls to No. 10 York

LEXINGTON, Va. - The No. 2 Washington and Lee University women's lacrosse team fell to No. 10 York College (Pa.) 12-8 on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference matchup.

In the sixth top-25 matchup of the year for the Generals (8-1), the Spartans (5-2) snapped W&L's eight-game winning streak thanks to a 8-1 run that spanned through the second and third quarters. The scoring spurt allowed YC to jump out to an 8-3 lead and the Blue and White were unable to overcome.

W&L scored the first two goals of the day, one from Shannon Timoney (Mendham, N.J. / West Morris Mendham) and Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y. / Bronxville) to go up 2-0 early but York responded with the next three tallies, one in the first quarter and a pair to open the second frame to take the lead, 3-2.

Eugenie Rovegno (Duxbury, Mass. / Duxbury) found Claire Horner (Richmond, Va. / St. Catherine's) in transition at the 1:53 mark in the second to break up the visitors' streak to tie up the game at 3-3. YC responded with a pair of tallies within 62 seconds of one another to close out the first half with a 5-3 advantage.

The Spartans added more damage to the scoreboard with three tallies to get out ahead 8-3. The two teams traded back-to-back goals over the next six scores. Jenny Lisovicz (Glen Ridge, N.J. / Glen Ridge) and Ginny Taylor (Madison, N.J. / Madison) scored the first two and Walker McKnight (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) buried the next two tallies. Taylor's and McKnight's second goals were both from the 8-meter fan. The Generals were able to cut the deficit down to three on two occasions in the final quarter but weren't able to get it any closer than that.

Timoney and Mcknight led the Generals' scoring with two goals each. Kiersten Blanchard and Logan Ward each had hat tricks for York.

The two teams were nearly even across the box score, W&L had a slight edge on ground balls (19-18), draw controls (12-11) and caused turnovers (13-12). However, the Spartans had the advantage on offensive statistics with 28 shots and 22 on goal compared to the Generals' 25 and 17 and the two teams evenly split 32 turnovers.

Junior keeper Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa. / Mercersburg) posted 10 stops and York's Balla Garabo had nine saves as both saw the entire 60 minutes of action.

The Generals will resume ODAC league play with a 6 p.m. matchup at Shenandoah University on Wednesday, March 29.
