W&L Announces 2023 Athletics Hall of Fame Class

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee University has announced the 36th class to be inducted into its Athletic Hall of Fame in a ceremony this fall.

Five inductees were selected to be honored during the fall ceremony: the 1974 men's lacrosse team, Sam Chase '99 (Men's Soccer) Kat Michaels '08 (Women's Lacrosse), Caitlin Lane '06 (Equestrian) and Emily Applegate '07 (Women's Tennis). Chase, Michaels and the 1974 men's lacrosse team join Applegate and Lane in the 36th Hall of Fame Class after Applegate and Lane were announced as members of the Class of 2022 but were unable to attend the induction ceremony.

The 36th class will be inducted on October 14, 2023. More details about the ceremony and events will follow.   

W&L Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2023

1974 Men's Lacrosse Team finished the regular season undefeated (14-0) and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. During the regular season, the Generals were ranked third in the country with major wins against Navy (13-10), Princeton (12-7), Duke (16-7), North Carolina (18-8), the University of Virginia (13-11), and Towson (19-17 OT). In the post-season tournament the Generals again defeated Navy (11-9) in the first round then dropped an 11-10 decision to Johns Hopkins in the second round. The Blue and White ended their season with a 15-1 overall record and outscored their opponents 237-128. 


Sam Chase '99 was a four-year letterwinner for the soccer team and a four-time selection to All-ODAC teams. He garnered First Team All-ODAC honors as a sophomore and senior, a Second Team All-ODAC pick as a freshman and an Honorable Mention All-ODAC selection as a junior.  During his sophomore campaign he was recognized as a Second Team All-South Region player and earned First Team VaSID All-State and All-South Region honors as a senior. Chase led the ODAC in goals as a freshman with 18 in 1995, holds the W&L record for career goals (52) and career points (117).  His 18 goals are second and 37 points are third on the W&L single-season record books. Chase also holds the record for career game winning goals (19) and is the only player in program history with 10+ goals in four consecutive seasons.


Caitlin Lane '06 was a four-year letterwinner for the equestrian team, earning First Team All-ODAC laurels all four years.  Additionally, she was tabbed the ODAC Rider of the Year following her rookie, sophomore and senior campaigns.  Lane took first place in either the open flat or open fences 29 times during her career, including eight times in her senior season alone.  She was a four-year qualifier for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) National Championships, finishing fourth in the open flat as a sophomore, third in the open fences and fifth in the open flat as a junior, and fourth in the open flat as a senior.  That season, she also finished seventh in the Cacchione Cup for the National Rider of the Year.  Lane helped lead the Generals to the program's first-ever ODAC Championship as a senior in 2006.
 

Emily Applegate '07 earned three letters as a member of the women's tennis team, transferring to W&L from the University of Richmond following her rookie season. She was the team's top player on the 2007 team that went on to win the NCAA Division III National Championship and she also claimed the 2006 NCAA Division III Singles Championship after finishing with a 33-3 singles record. Applegate also finished as the NCAA Singles Runner-up in 2007 and she received All-America honors a total of five times across singles and doubles play. A three-time First Team All-ODAC honoree and two-time ODAC Player of the Year, she was a 2006 nominee for the Honda Award, which is presented to the Division III Female Athlete of the Year. She posted a 65-6 career singles record and a 58-14 career doubles mark. In addition to winning the 2007 team title, she also helped the Generals to a pair of NCAA runner-up finishes and a 70-3 overall record across her three seasons.


Kat Michaels '08 was a four-year letterwinner for the women's lacrosse team and a team captain as a senior. Michaels earned First Team All-ODAC honors her final three seasons and collected multiple major awards her senior year. In her final campaign for the Blue and White, Michaels garnered the ODAC Player of the Year Award, VaSID College Division Player of the Year Award, First Team All-Chesapeake Region and was named a First Team All-American by the IWLCA, Inside Lacrosse and womenslacrosse.com in addition to claim on the National Defender of the Year by all three organizations. Michaels helped the defense rank third in the country with a 6.15 goals-against average, led the team with 29 caused turnovers, scooped up a second-best 43 ground balls and tallied one goal and five assists. As an underclassman, she earned All-Region recognitions twice and was named an IWLCA Third Team All-American her junior year. Over her four year career, Michaels played in 67 games with 58 starts with 124 ground balls and 103 caused turnovers. The defense twice ranked No. 1 in Division III in goals allowed during her career (2005 & 2007). Over the four year stretch, the team posted a 63-15 overall record and a 32-0 mark in the ODAC during her four seasons, all of which resulted in ODAC titles and NCAA Tournament bids. At the W&L Athletics Awards banquet, she received the 2008 Pres Brown Award as the most valuable senior female athlete.
