FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Junior
Gabi Moss (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Chaparral) fought off a third-set deficit in No. 4 singles to win the final match of the day to give the No. 22 Washington and Lee women's tennis team a 5-4 win over No. 31 Skidmore on the first day of the Blue-Grey Invite at Mary Washington on Saturday.
Moss took the first set, 7-6 (7-3), but Skidmore's (6-4) Grace Truong won the second set by a 6-4 margin. In the third, Truong jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Moss battled back for a 7-5 win and the 5-4 team win.
Senior
Becket Waters (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham B. Broughton) and Moss gave W&L (6-3) an initial 1-0 lead with an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles, but the Thoroughbreds moved ahead, 2-1, with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. First-years
Grace Lorenz (Oklahoma City, Okla. / Epic Charter Schools) and
Riho Iijima (Portland, Ore. / Westview) were edged at No. 3 by Beilynn Geiss and Konika Dhull, 8-7 (7-2).
First-year
Lauren Long (Carmel, Ind. / Park Tudor) and junior
Izzy Koziol (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) wasted little time dispatching their opposition at No. 1 and No. 3 singles. Long downed Maya Lal, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 to tie the match, 2-2, while Koziol's 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 put the Generals back in the lead. After Skidmore's Konika Dhull won at No. 5, junior
Margaret Carlton (Matthews, N.C. / Charlotte Christian) claimed victory at No. 6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, to put the Generals one win away from the team win.
Skidmore's Ella Provost knotted the match, 4-4, with a win at No. 4, leaving it up to Moss and Truong at No. 2.
The Generals will be back in action on Sunday at UMW with a 10:00 am first serve against No. 15 Trinity (Texas).
