Generals drop D3 Showcase contest against No. 6 Marietta

Box Score KANNAPOLIS, N.C. –  The Washington and Lee baseball team completed its second of three D3 Showcase matchups with a 13-2 seven-inning loss against No. 6 Marietta College Saturday night.
 
The Generals move to 3-2 overall with the loss, while the Pioneers now sit at 2-1 overall with the win.
 
The Pioneers got on the board early with a seven-run first inning. The seven-run, seven-hit frame began with a couple of singles by junior third baseman Nick Bonnizzio and senior center fielder Trent Valentine. A double by graduate right fielder Brett Carson drove in Bonnizzio to put the Pioneers on the board. Marietta strung together four singles before the Generals were able to get out of the jam.
 
W&L got on the board in the fourth with a leadoff double by sophomore catcher Campbell Charneco (Clifton, Va./Centreville) who then scored off a sacrifice fly to right field by junior second baseman Jacob Jackson (Norfolk, Va./Maury).
 
Marietta answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and two in the sixth. W&L's final run came across in the top of the seventh on a sac fly to right from junior Zach Senders (Potomac, Md./Bullis School).
 
Bonnizzio, sophomore second baseman Cole Yeager, and sophomore catcher Ty Davis led the way for the Pioneers by each recording three-hit games. The trio finished the night totaling six runs scored and seven runs batted in. Additionally, junior designated hitter Ben Kaplin wrapped up his night with two hits, two runs and one run batted in.
 
The Generals ended the game with three extra-base hits, plus a single by first-year second baseman Nick Lagges (Chicago, Ill. / Lane Tech). Senior center fielder Mitchell Salvino (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic), senior left fielder Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va./James Madison) and Charneco all finished the game with a multi-bagger.
 
Senior pitcher Kail Hill (1-0) earned the win with a seven-inning complete game outing for the Pioneers. Hill managed five total scoreless innings allowing four hits with three walks and four strikeouts, with both runs earned. W&L sophomore pitcher John Benner (McLean, Va./St. Albans) (1-1) was the W&L pitcher of record.
 
The Generals will close out their D3 Showcase outing on Sunday with a 4:30 pm matchup against Berry College.
