GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The No. 21 Washington and Lee women's tennis team snapped a three-match losing streak with an 8-1 win over DePauw on Saturday.
The Generals improve to 5-3 overall this season with the win, while the Tigers drop to 1-4 overall with the loss.
W&L claimed victory in two of the three doubles matches for an early lead. Wins came in from junior
Margaret Carlton (Matthews, N.C. / Charlotte Christian) and first-year
Lauren Long (Carmel, Ind. / Park Tudor), 8-2, at the top spot and junior
Izzy Koziol (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) and first-year
Riho Iijima (Portland, Ore. / Westview), 8-4, at No. 2.
Long (1) and Koziol (3) made quick work of their singles opponents, as both players won by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Iijima and junior
Gabi Moss (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Chaparral) also cruised in straight sets. Iijima defeated Kiley Shaw, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4, while Moss downed Kat Wilder, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2.
Rounding out the wins for the Blue and White was junior
Kaitlyn Chalker (Kennesaw, Ga. / Rivers Academy) at No. 5 and first-year
Jordan Kach (Warrenton, Va. / Seton School) at No. 6. Chalker claimed the first set over Franny Werner, 6-2, before Werner retired. Kach defeated Bella DeNardo by a 6-2, 6-0 mark to improve to 3-0 individually this season.
The Generals will be off until Saturday, March 18, when they take on No. 28 Skidmore at 3:00 pm in the Blue-Grey Invite hosted at the University of Mary Washington.
