Women's Basketball ODAC Tournament preview

W&L Women's Basketball 2022-23 ODAC Championship Preview

2/21/2023 10:22:00 AM

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced the seedings for the upcoming Women's Basketball Championship and Washington and Lee earned the top seed.

The Generals finished the regular season with an overall record of 19-6, which included a 16-2 mark in the ODAC. The 16 ODAC wins tied the program record for most conference wins in a season set last season, while the 19 overall wins are one shy of tying the 2021-22 team's program record.

Randolph-Macon will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament, followed by Bridgewater and Guilford to round out the Top 4 teams. Randolph is seeded fifth, with Roanoke, Shenandoah, and Ferrum completing the field.

Being one of the Top 6 seeds, the Generals earned a bye into the quarterfinals, where they will face No. 8 Ferrum. Ferrum punched its ticket to Salem by defeating ninth-seeded Lynchburg on Monday, 71-49, in the ODAC First Round. W&L defeated Ferrum twice during the regular season by scores of 62-43 on November 10 and 79-52 on January 28.

W&L enters the ODAC Tournament with the highest-scoring offense in the league and the 24th-ranked offense in Division III, averaging what would be a program-record 75.0 points per game. The Generals have dominated on the boards this season, as they average 51.1 total rebounds per game, which is 9.2 per game higher than the next closest team. Their rebounding average ranks third in the nation, they have the fourth-best rebounding margin per game (14.0) and they lead Division III in blocks per game (8.0) and total blocks (204).

Leading W&L this season, both offensively and defensively, is first-year Mary Schleusner (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Latin School), who was named the ODAC Rookie and Defensive Player of the Year, as well as First Team All-ODAC. Schleusner is the leading scorer for the Generals at 13.4 points per game, which is also the fifth-best average in the ODAC. Schleusner also leads the conference in total blocks (75) and blocks per game (3.0). Her 75 total blocks are currently the second most in a season in program history and it is already the eighth highest career total for the program. Pulling down the second-most rebounds per game in the ODAC (11.3), Schleusner broke the program's single-game rebound record with 23 against Roanoke on January 11, before going for another 21 against Bridgewater just three weeks later.

Junior guard Hanna Malik (Raleigh, N.C. / Athens Drive), also a First Team All-ODAC pick, is another one of W&L's top scoring threats, particularly from the outside. At 12.8 points per game this season, Malik has made 63 three-point shots on 33.7 percent shooting. She also adds 3.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Malik's 63 makes from long range this season have vaulted her from ninth on the program's all-time three-point field goal list to fourth with 162 in her three seasons donning the Blue and White.

Junior Grace O'Connor (Hillsborough, N.J. / Hillsborough), a Third Team All-ODAC selection this season, has proven to be the top facilitator of the high-powered W&L offense, as evidenced by her team-high 93 assists this season and 3.7 per game. Both marks are tied for the ODAC high, and O'Connor is also adding 6.0 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game in a team-high 28.1 minutes per contest. Senior Kathryn Vandiver (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Latin School) joins the mix of rebounders with 7.1 per game in 24 games, with 7.1 points per game on 50.8 percent shooting in addition to 1.2 steals and 1.2 blocks per game.

Along with Schleusner, W&L's first-year shooting combo of Elka Prechel (Corvallis, Ore. / Corvallis) and Sofia Feigelson (Millbrook, N.Y. / Millbrook School) have shined in their rookie seasons. Prechel enters the tournament with 75 total three-point shots made, which is tied with Meg Ingram '12 for the program record. Prechel is connecting on 37.9 percent (75-198) of her long-range attempts, while scoring an even 10 points per game. Feigelson is contributing 7.5 points per game, but she comes into the tournament as the conference leader in three-point field goal percentage at 41.6 (32-77), a mark that is currently second best in a season in program history.

If the Generals advance to the semifinals in the ODAC Tournament, they will take on the winner of the quarterfinal between No. 4 Guilford and No. 5 Randolph on Saturday at 1:00 pm. The ODAC Women's Basketball Championship game will be played on Sunday at 1:00 pm. Tickets for all the games at the Salem Civic Center can be purchased in advance via Ticket Spicket.
