No. 8 Generals Earn First Win Under Coleman in Season Opener, 15-8 Against No. 6 F&M

LEXINGTON, Va. - The No. 8 Washington and Lee University women's lacrosse team overthrew the No. 6 Franklin & Marshall Diplomats, 15-8,  in the opening contest of the 2023 season.

The Generals (1-0) started off the Coleman era with a seven-goal victory over the Diplomats (0-1) and marked the fifth win for the Blue and White in the last six meetings between the two teams on Sunday.

The home team defense, led by a career-best 11 stops from Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa. / Mercersburg) in the cage, did not give up back-to-back F&M goals all afternoon.

The Diplomats scored first after the two teams committed turnovers on their opening possessions. F&M's Maddy Birch tallied the first goal on Watt Field for the 2023 season off an unassisted goal - a roll up the left side of the crease at the 13:07 mark.

W&L responded with a pair of goals a minute apart from Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa. / Harriton) and Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y. / Bronxville) to take the lead, 2-1. Both finished with five points in the season opener. Schwab's goal came off a Ginny Taylor (Madison, N.J. / Madison) feed to the senior in the middle of the 8-meter fan.

An F&M tally broke up what would have been six straight goals as Alex Petras (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset), Cat Caples (Reisterstown, Md. / St. Paul's School for Girls), Claire Horner (Richmond, Va. / St. Catherine's) and Schwab ended the opening stanza with a 4-0 Generals' run.

The two teams settled into their defense in the second quarter, each allowed only one goal, and the Blue and White owned a 7-3 lead at the break. WLU opened the second half with a 4-1 scoring run, Bishop tallied two and Schwab along with Julia Thomson (Larchmont, N.Y. / Hackley) found the back of the net on their respective awarded free position. Thomson's goal at the 5:41 mark put the Generals up by 7.

Through the rest of the contest, the two teams traded goals and the Generals coasted to victory. W&L ended the day with a 14-12 advantage in the draw control category. F&M owned the advantage in the circle 7-5 during the opening half, W&L's adjustments made at the break reaped a 9-5 advantage in the third and fourth quarters to balance out the stat line. Shannon Timoney (Mendham, N.J. West Morris Mendham) recorded a team high 4 draw controls, Madison Bray grabbed six DCs for the visitors.

Kranich and the defense successfully cleared the transition on 19 of 23 occasions and forced 11 turnovers. Senior Sam Van Belle (Lebanon, N.J. North Hunterdon) had a team-most three caused turnovers.

The Generals converted all six free position shots into points on the scoreboard.
Schwab finished the afternoon with four goals and an assist. Thomson, Timoney and Petras all had a pair of goals and Bishop added three goals with two assists.

The Generals will travel to Christopher Newport University on Wednesday, February 22. First draw is slated for 3:30 p.m.
