LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior right fielder
Mason Satterfield (Vienna, Va./James Madison) came through with the game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth to propel the Washington and Lee baseball team to a 9-8 win over Ursinus on Sunday to complete the two-game sweep.
The Generals (2-0) began the bottom of ninth inning tied, 8-8, before junior shortstop
Ethan Zulueta (Matthews, N.C. / Weddington) reached first on an error and then advanced to second with a well-placed sacrifice bunt by sophomore catcher
Jon Torre (Ashburn, Va. / Briar Woods). Two batters later, Satterfield singled to right field to score Zulueta and end the game.
With W&L out in front by an 8-4 score through seven innings, Ursinus managed to tie the game with four runs in the top of the eighth. The Grizzly Bears had three singles in succession with one out, with Tom Snipes tapping a single down the first base line to score Nick Diaz from third. With runners on first and second, Jared Minnichbach stepped to the plate and hit a three-run home run to tie the game.
The Generals jumped out to an early 3-0 lead through two innings, highlighted by a two-run second inning that saw Satterfield score on a straight steal of home plate. Ursinus then used a four-run third inning, including a two-run triple to left center off the bat of Solomon Griffith, to move ahead, 4-3.
Sophomore pitcher
Evan Blair (Vienna, Va./James Madison) entered out of the bullpen to start the fourth inning, and he proceeded to silence the Ursinus bats. Blair retired all 12 batters he faced, striking out five in the process, while the Generals regained the lead on offense. Just as they did on Saturday, the W&L bats boomed with a five-run fifth inning. Junior third baseman
Zach Senders (Potomac, Md. / Bullis School) had the big hit in the inning, a two-run double down the right field line, in addition to RBI knocks from Zulueta and Satterfield.
Sophomore
Campbell Charneco (Clifton, Va./Centreville) (1-0) earned the win on the mound after he allowed no runs on no hits with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work. At the plate, Charneco went 1-for-2, but walked three times to reach base in four of his five plate appearances. Senders and Satterfield each finished with three hits and two RBI, with Senders and Zulueta scoring a team-high two runs each.
Sophomore righty Mike Scheller (0-1) took the loss for the Grizzly Bears after 1.1 innings of work resulted in one unearned run allowed on one hit and two walks. Ursinus used five pitchers, all of which combined for nine strikeouts, five walks, and nine runs (two earned).
Offensively, Minnichbach led the way with a pair of hits and four runs driven in. Snipes and Griffith each ended the game with two hits, two RBI and two runs.
The Generals will be back at home for their next matchup against Castleton University on Tuesday beginning at 3:30 pm.
