LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior center fielder
Mitchell Salvino (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic), first-year right fielder
Paul Ramseur (Atlanta, Ga./Pace), and junior designated hitter
Julian Domenech (New York, N.Y./Hunter College) combined for four home runs to power the Washington and Lee baseball team to a 12-6 win over Castleton University on Tuesday evening.
The Generals entered the bottom of the fifth inning trailing, 4-2, before an RBI single by sophomore catcher
Campbell Charneco (Clifton, Va./Centreville) cut the deficit to one. A hit-by-pitch followed by a single through the left side by junior shortstop
Ethan Zulueta (Matthews, N.C./Weddington) evened the score at four. With Generals on the corners, Ramseur stepped to the plate and hit a go-ahead three-run home run to make it 7-4.
Out of the final five runs that the Generals scored after the fifth, four were driven in on three long balls. Salvino tallied solo home runs in the sixth and eighth innings, with a Domenech two-run blast coming in the at-bat prior to Salvino's in the eighth.
In the top of the first, a two-out solo shot by Spartan second baseman Tyler McLain gave Castleton the early lead. Three batters later, sophomore designated hitter Jack Boyle singled up the middle to make it 2-0. The Generals tied the game in the bottom of the third with hits by both Charneco and junior first baseman
Drew Larsen (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run). The Spartans pulled together a couple of well-placed hits to put up single-run frames in both the fourth and fifth, leading up to the five-run W&L fifth.
The W&L offense finished the game with four home runs on the day, the most since hitting five in the second game of a doubleheader on April 16, 2013, against Shenandoah. Salvino led the way with a 3-for-4 performance at the dish, adding a single and two additional runs scored to his pair of solo home runs. Charneco added three hits as well and a couple of RBI. Additionally, Larsen and Zulueta strung together a couple of hits, their second multi-hit games already this season, and combined for three runs and three RBI.
Lefty first-year pitcher
Bob Burr (Potomac, Md./Kiski) (1-0) earned the win with a promising first outing. Burr entered in the fifth inning with two outs and proceeded to work 3.1 innings on the mound without giving up any runs and only three hits. Burr also ended with two punchouts and zero walks.
Sophomore pitcher
Matt Fleming (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) started his first career game for W&L where he threw the first 3.1 innings for the Generals, followed by sophomore
Jack Cope (Chevy Chase, Md./Landon School) for 1.1 frames ahead of Burr. Sophomore
Jack Belbot (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) logged two outs in the ninth before first-year
Ben Sundell (Liberty, Mo./Liberty) struck out the final hitter of the game.
McLain led the Spartans going 4-for-5 with one RBI and a team-high two runs. Sophomore right fielder Jackson Cardozo managed three singles on the day. Graduate first baseman Evan Keegan and senior catcher Addison Schaub both put together two-hit performances, with Keegan driving in a pair of runs.
Senior pitcher Riley Orr (0-1) received the loss on the day with an ending stat line of six runs on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks in 4.1 innings on the mound.
The Generals head on the road to take part in the D3 Showcase in Kannapolis, N.C., at Atrium Health Ballpark, and will first face off against Piedmont University on Thursday at 7:00 pm.
