LEXINGTON, Va. – The 21st-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team opened its spring slate on Friday evening with a 6-3 loss against No. 12 Case Western Reserve in the first match of the W&L Invitational.

The Generals (4-1) fell behind, 2-0, after the first two doubles matches, but got on the scoreboard when senior Becket Waters (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham B. Broughton) and junior Gabi Moss (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Chaparral) earned a hard-fought 8-7 (8-6) win at No. 3. Waters had the clinching point with a rocket of a forehand winner up the line.

The Spartans (4-0) claimed each of the first three singles decisions to clinch the win, as Hannah Kassaie (1), Radha Patel (3) and Lily McCloskey (2) won in straight sets.

W&L claimed two singles wins in the final two matches to finish, however. First-year Grace Lorenz (Oklahoma City, Okla. / Epic Charter Schools) defeated Anna Kan, 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9) at No. 5, while junior Margaret Carlton (Matthews, N.C. / Charlotte Christian) battled back after dropping the first set to Asha Shukla to take the second set, 6-2, and the decisive third set, 10-2 at No. 6.

The Generals will continue with the W&L Invitational on Saturday when they take on 10th-ranked Sewanee at 2:30 pm in the Duchossois Tennis Center.
