KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The United Soccer Coaches released its final Division III Men's Soccer rankings on Tuesday, and Washington and Lee earned the No. 3 spot.
St. Olaf, who won the 2023 national championship, topped the poll, followed by runner-up Amherst at No. 2. Following the Generals was Washington (Md.), who fell to St. Olaf in the semifinals, and Middlebury to round out the Top 5.
The Generals' No. 3 ranking ties the program's all-time best end-of-season ranking from the United Soccer Coaches. The team also came in third in the final poll following their appearance in the 2021 national semifinals.
W&L completed the 2023 season with an overall record of 15-4-6, the ninth consecutive season that the program has posted a 0.720 winning percentage or better. The Generals scored 59 goals across their 25 games, the third-highest total in program history. In fact, all four of the program's highest scoring seasons have come in the last four fall seasons.
The Generals earned the top seed in the ODAC Tournament this season following an 8-1-1 output in conference play, and made their second straight ODAC championship game appearance. The team then went 3-0-2 in the NCAA Tournament, with wins over Western Connecticut State, SUNY Oneonta and No. 20 Tufts in the first three rounds, before advancing past No. 16 Colorado College in a shootout in the quarterfinals.
W&L's appearance in the national semifinals was their second in program history, and both have come in the last three seasons. The Generals claimed seven All-ODAC awards, including the Offensive Player of the Year in junior
Weyimi Agbeyegbe, plus four all-region citations and an All-America Third Team honor for Agbeyegbe.
