MARYVILLE, Tenn. – A three-point shot with eight seconds from senior
Robert DiSibio sent the game to overtime, but Maryville outlasted the Washington and Lee men's basketball team in the extra period as the Generals fell, 87-84, on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Generals (5-2) trailed by six points with six minutes left in the second half, before a layup from sophomore
Colin Ryan gave the team momentum into a 9-2 run to regain a one-point lead with one minute left. The Scots (6-2) then hit two free throws and a three, all from Reed Kemp, before DiSibio sank a triple with 21 seconds to cut the W&L deficit to one point. After Maryville hit two more free throws, DiSibio walked into another three-pointer with eight seconds left to force overtime.
DiSibio stayed hot to start the extra frame with a three-pointer on the opening possession, but Maryville then held the Blue and White to four points over the next four minutes, while scoring 11 themselves, to jump back out to a four-point lead. Two foul shots from senior
Jack d'Entremont, a layup from the Scots' RJ Simmons and a triple from W&L senior
Drew Harrell left the contest favoring Maryville by one, before Kemp sank another two foul shots to yield the final.
The second half saw both sides use multiple runs to try gaining an edge over the other. Maryville came out of the half on a 15-6 stretch to take a 43-39 lead, before W&L countered with a 14-6 to flip the margin to a four-point Generals lead. The Scots answered with a 14-4 run until the 6:28 mark to gain a six-point advantage, leading into the 9-2 W&L run.
The Scots opened the game on a 17-7 run, with five of their first six made shots coming from long range. After both sides split eight points evenly, the Generals looked to seize control of the game with a 20-3 run across over eight minutes of play to take a 31-24 lead with 1:46 left before halftime.
