BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's basketball team got 36 points from
Robert DiSibio, plus 23 points and 21 rebounds from senior
Jack d'Entremont, on Tuesday night, but Bridgewater prevailed by a final score of 91-83.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
With Bridgewater (2-1, 1-0 ODAC) ahead, 71-55, halfway through the second half, the Generals (2-1, 0-1 ODAC) kickstarted an 18-6 run, which ended on a 9-0 spurt, with a pair of
Conor Roberton free throws plus 10 points from DiSibio. The Eagles' defense got back in the game, however, limiting the Blue and White to just two points over the next 3:07, while the offense scored eight, to cushion the lead back to 11 points.
The Generals made the Eagles sweat in the final minute, as layups from DiSibio and senior
Drew Harrell, plus a three from junior
Thomas Feigin, got W&L back within six points with 32 seconds remaining. Bridgewater then iced the game away with four free throws in the final 30 seconds.
The Eagles raced out to an early 14-4 lead through the first five minutes of play, which included five points from Alec Topper. For remainder of the half, neither team had any sustained scoring runs, as Bridgewater gradually grew its lead to 47-30 heading to the break. Three-point shooting was a major factor in the opening 20 minutes, as the Eagles made 12-of-25 shots from distance while holding the Blue and White to 1-of-10.
TOP PERFORMERS:
DiSibio finished the night with 36 points for his second consecutive 30-point outing. The senior added six rebounds to his line and shot 14-of-23 from the floor. d'Entremont dominated on the glass for W&L with a career-high 21 rebounds, along with 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting.
Harrell added nine points and five rebounds for the Generals, and Feigin scored six points.
RK Law and Topper led the BC offense with a combined 44 points. Law tallied a team-high 24 on 7-of-10 shooting and 6-of-9 from deep, while Topper scored 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting overall and 4-of-9 from three-point range. Topper also secured 10 boards for a double-double.
Aaron Oates finished the game with 14 points on 5-of-8 overall, plus seven rebounds, and Jordan Cooper collected 11 points and five assists.
NOTEWORTHY POINTS:
d'Entremont's 21-rebound game was not only a career-high effort, it was the most for a General since J.D. Ey '13 also had 21 boards against Bridgewater on January 30, 2013. His 23 points and 21 rebounds also mark the only 20-point, 20-rebound game for W&L men's basketball player across the last 21 seasons.
With his 36 points, DiSibio needs just four more to tie Mike Holton '91 for 21st on the program's all-time scoring list. It was DiSibio's seventh career 30-point game, and it is the first time that he has recorded back-to-back 30-point efforts.
TEAM STATS:
The Generals shot 42.7 percent (32-75) from the floor, which included a mark of 50 percent (19-38) in the second half, en route to 53 points in the final 20 minutes. The Eagles slightly edged the Blue and White in overall shooting percentage at 42.9 (30-70), but they made 18-of-46 (.391) three-point shots. Bridgewater also held the edges in second-chance points (24-15) and bench points (37-8), while W&L dominated in the paint with a 50-18 scoring margin inside.
UP NEXT:
The Generals will have a quick turnaround with a Wednesday trip to Mary Baldwin in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off against the Fighting Squirrels.
