Men's Basketball Shines on Alumni Day, 104-62 Over Lynchburg

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University men's basketball team welcomed alumni back to campus with a 104-62 win over the University of Lynchburg on Saturday evening.

The Hornets (14-4, 1-8 ODAC) scored the initial basket of the game but the Generals (13-6, 6-4) ran away with the ODAC contest and recorded their second largest margin of victory in series history, 42 points.

The Blue and White fell just shy of the largest margin of victory, 45 points, in the 129 lifetime matchups. W&L defeated LYN (then Lynchburg College) 105-60 February 9, 1970 in Lexington.

Lynchburg put points on the board first but the Generals answered with a Richie Manigault (Stewartsville, N.J. / Phillipsburg) three to take the lead for the rest of the way. Manigault's jumper started a 14-0 spurt for the home team. In the middle of the run, Drew Harrell (Collingswood, N.J. / Paul VI) grabbed a defensive board and  found Robert DiSibio (Sandy Hook, Conn. / Newtown) open for an electric fast break dunk in front of the Bleed Blue and program's alumni day crowd.

WLU drained seven three-pointers and shot 52.6 percent from the floor (20-of-38) in the opening stanza to jump out to a 58-27 advantage at the break.

The second period featured an impressive 24-point run which spanned back to the 6:02 mark in the first half. The scoring streak was capped at 17:00, DiSibio's second dunk of the night, this one was set up by Sam Wise (Winchester, Va. / Handley).

In the second half, the Blue and White outscored LYN 46-35 and owned the night's largest lead at the 4:21 mark, 51 points, 102-51.

All 13 Generals who were dressed for action saw the court and drained at least one made field goal. With that, the squad recorded 38 makes on 75 attempts, both are season-highs for 2022-23.

W&L out-rebounded LYN 59-37 to set a new season-best, the 16 offensive boards resulted in 19 second chance points for the Generals.

DiSibio led all scorers with 24 points and Wise added 14. Off the bench, Cheick Toure (Silver Spring, Md. / Sandy Spring Friends) recorded a season-most 12 points and came away with a pair of steals in 13:18 of play.

Defensively, the home team recorded 11 steals and blocked five of Lynchburg's shot attempts.

Off the bench, Alex Fitch led the Hornets' scoring efforts with 14 points in just under 22 minutes of action.

The Generals will be back in Holekamp on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. start time against Bridgewater College on January 25.
