Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – The top-seeded Washington and Lee women's tennis team seized its 19th straight ODAC Championship on Sunday at the W&L Upper Courts, defeating second-seeded Sweet Briar by a score of 5-0.
The Generals wasted little time assuming a 2-0 advantage, with the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams each winning their matches 8-1. The No. 1 doubles team of senior
Taylor Garcia (Mandeville, La. / Mount Carmel Academy) and sophomore
Margaret Carlton (Matthews, N.C. / Charlotte Christian) faced a much stiffer test, but eventually prevailed over Ruth DeSouza and Ana Patino by a score of 8-6 to carry a 3-0 lead into singles action.
In singles, W&L closed out the match with wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions. Junior
Becket Waters (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham B. Broughton) gave W&L a 4-0 lead when she defeated Sofia Andrade, 6-0, 6-4, at third singles. Junior
Marta Mikos (Willowbrook, Ill. / Hinsdale South) then closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Allison Wandling at fourth singles.
Washington and Lee has now is now 15-6 on the season. Sweet Briar fell to 23-4 overall.
W&L has now won 31 conference titles in the last 33 years. The Generals will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship, which begins on Friday, May 13. The site and opponent will be revealed on Monday.
