Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – The ninth-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team powered past No. 24 Christopher Newport by a 7-2 score on Friday evening.
The Generals improve to 3-0 overall with the win, while the Captains fall to 1-2 overall with the loss.
W&L won all three doubles matches and clinched the match after two singles wins put the Generals up, 5-0. Senior
Taylor Garcia (Mandeville, La./Mount Carmel Academy) and sophomores
Margaret Carlton (Matthews, N.C./Charlotte Christian) and
Kaitlyn Chalker (Kennesaw, Ga./Rivers Academy) highlighted the match by contributing to two wins each.
Garcia and Carlton paired at No. 1 doubles for an 8-6 win over Tessa Trate and Raine Weis. Garcia went on to defeat Trate, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 1 singles, while Carlton defeated Kendra Womack, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5. Chalker teamed up with junior
Marta Mikos (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles over Megan Bauer and Kiersten Chang.
After dropping the opening set by a 6-1 score at No. 6 singles, Chalker bounced back to win the second and third sets, 6-4 and 10-8, respectively, to defeat Karina Crivtonencu.
W&L will be back in action on Sunday when it hosts No. 6 Sewanee at the Duchossois Tennis Center at 10:00 am.
