Men's Basketball Dominates the Boards in 74-65 Win Over EMU

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University men's basketball squad defeated Eastern Mennonite University 74-65 in the night-cap of the first Old Dominion Athletic Conference double-header of the 2022-23 season in Holekamp Gym.

The Generals (5-2, 1-1 ODAC) posted the nine-point victory over the Royals (3-4, 0-2) by dominating the boards with 51 rebounds which included 20 on the offensive end and then capitalized on those with 15 second-chance points.

In the Wednesday night victory, Sam Wise (Winchester, Va. / Handley) grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds with 13 points and dished out eight assists, two shy of a triple-double.

Robert DiSibio (Sandy Hook, Conn. / Newtown) and Drew Harrell (Collingswood, N.J. / Paul VI) both added 16 points and Richie Manigault's (Stewartsville, N.J. / Phillipsburg) 12 rounded out the quartet of double-digit scorers.

W&L led for 38:35 of the league matchup and only trailed by a point for 31 seconds following a Michael Watlington dunk for the visitors at 13:52.

The lead didn't last long as a 10-3 run over the course of the next two minutes was capped by a three-pointer from Jack Lewis (Rockville, Md. / Sidwell Friends) that extended the W&L gap to a nine-point advantage with 6:27 remaining in the opening half.

EMU was able cut the deficit down 38-35 at the end of the first half with a Aviwe Mahlong jumper before heading into the lockerroom.

The Blue and White remained consistent in the second stanza but the visitors were able to come back within one 50-49 at the 10:27 mark.

Fortunately for the W&L faithful, Wise hit a jumper in the paint and back-to-back three-pointers from Harrell and Cheick Toure (Silver Springs, Md. / Sandy Springs Friends) extended the lead out into double-digits for the first time all evening with the 10-1 run.

The largest lead came at the 0:31 mark with a fastbreak Jack d'Entremont dunk from Lewis, the Generals went ahead 70-57.

EMU hit two deep field goals from behind the arc in the final 30 seconds but couldn't come closer than within nine points of the home team.

Landon Swingler had a game-high 20 points for the visitors and Mahlong added 14.

W&L tallied 18 assists, nine steals and out-rebounded EMU 51-26.

The team will return to action at No. 8 Randolph-Macon College on Saturday, December 3 at 2 p.m. for a league matchup.
