Men's Basketball Opens up the 2022-23 Season with a Win at Home

The Generals Fought off a 12-point Deficit to Defeat PSU-Altoona 82-71 in Season Opener

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University men's basketball team opened up the 2022-23 season with an 81-72 victory over Penn State Altoona on Sunday afternoon.

The Generals (1-0) battled back from a 12-point deficit midway through the opening half of play to pull ahead by one point, 37-36 at the break.

The Lions (0-2) scored 13 consecutive points between the 17:10 and 11:08 mark but the Blue and White stopped the bleeding with an 8-point run to cut the visitor's lead in half.

A Drew Harrell (Collingswood, N.J. / Paul VI) put-back gave W&L the go-ahead basket with 1:18 to play in the first half of the 2022-23 season

Andruw Harman opened up the second stanza with a layup but that would be the last lead for the away team. Jack Lewis (Rockville, Md. / Sidwell Friends)  hit a three from Robert DiSibio (Sandy Hook, Conn. / Newtowm) on the ensuing possession and the home team did not look back the rest of the way.

Jack d'Entremont (Bryn Mawr, Pa. / Radnor) drained a jumper in the paint and turned a shooting foul into a three-point play at the 4:02 mark. The free throw gave W&L a 73-60 advantage and extended the lead out to 13 points, the largest of the night for either team.

Washington and Lee closed out the contest ahead by nine to earn the non-conference victory.

d'Entremont led W&L in scoring with 17 points, including the first ten points of the game for the Generals. The junior grabbed a game-high 13 boards to earn a double-double in the opener.

Five Generals, d'Entremont, Lewis, DiSibio, Thomas Feigin (New York, N.Y. / Trevor Day) and Sam Wise (Winchester, Va. / Handley)  all scored in the double-digits.

Lewis and Feigin were excellent from long-range to help the squad finish 11-of-31 (35.5%) behind the arc.

The Generals bested the Lions from the charity stripe 14-of-18 (77.8%) compared to PSU-A's 6-of-18 (33.3%).

Savion Word scored a game-high 18 points for PSU-A and Robbie Hicks and PJ Charles tallied 11 points each for the visitors.

Wise and d'Entremont each dished out four assists out of the team's 17 helpers and Wise came up with four steals on the defensive end, a game-high on either side of the benches.

Up next, the Blue and White will host Mary Baldwin on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Holekamp for a non-conference contest.
