MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The eighth-ranked Washington and Lee women's golf team tied the program record for lowest team round originally set yesterday, finishing in a tie for fifth-place out of 13 teams at the Montgomery Country Club Invitational on Monday.
One day after shooting a program-record score of 300, the Generals did it again, finishing the event with a two-day score of 300-300—600 (+24). The prior record of 301 (+13) was set at the Golfweek Invitational in 2014.
Seventh-ranked Emory emerged as the team champion in a stiff field that included six of the Top 10 teams in Division III. The Eagles shot -5 on Monday to finish with a 287-283—570 (-6). Second-ranked Carnegie Mellon finished with a 286-286—572 (-4) to place second, while top-ranked Methodist carded a +2 score of 298-280—578 to place third. Berry, ranked 14th, was fourth with a 596 (+20) and the Generals tied for fifth at 600 with sixth-ranked Centre.
Carnegie Mellon's Sriya Mupparaju claimed individual medalist honors by shooting a 68 (-4) on Monday, completing the tournament at -6 (70-68—138). She won by one stroke over Rylee Suttor of Centre, who posted a 70-69—139 (-5).
Junior
Megan Kanaby (Chapel Hill, N.C. / Cardinal Gibbons) led the Generals with a tie for 12th-place overall. She carded a 73-73—146 (+2) that is tied with Laurie Jones '21 and Liza Freed '18 for the lowest 36-hole total in program history.
Senior
Savannah Johnson (Owens Cross Roads, Ala. / Huntsville) placed 28th overall out of the 72-person field, finishing with a +8 score of 74-78—152. First-year
Laetitia Roegner (Greenwich, Conn. / IMG Academy) was one stroke behind Johnson in a tie for 29th with a +9 score of 76-77—153, while first-year
An Shelmire (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) tied for 31st with an 82-72—154 (+10). Shelmire shot the Generals' low round of the tournament, carding an even-par 72 on Monday. Included in her score was an eagle on the Par 5 seventh hole.
First-year
Marcella Mercer (Bigfork, Montana / Flathead) rounded out the Generals in the field with a +12 score of 77-79—156 that placed in a tie for 35th overall.
Washington and Lee returns to action on September 27-28 when it plays in the NCAA Preview at the Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas.
