WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The eighth-ranked Washington and Lee women's golf team closed out its fall season on Tuesday, improving by nine strokes from round one to take fifth at the Historic Triangle Invitational.
TEAM & INDIVIDUAL LEADERS THRU ROUND 2:
- No. 2 Emory claimed the team title with a 12-over for the tournament, which came after shooting just 1-over on Tuesday. No. 1 Carnegie Mellon was just one stroke back overall and shot 2-over in the second round. Rounding out the Top 5 was No. 27 Grinnell (+29), No. 20 Denison (+33) and the Generals (+35).
- Amanda Zheng (Emory) and Samantha Wang (CMU) tied atop the individual leaderboard, but Zheng claimed medalist honors after winning in a playoff on the 18th hole. Both players finished 1-under for the tournament, while Zheng was 4-under in round two.
- Emory's Carys Code placed third overall at even par, followed by Alyssa Lim (+1 – CMU) and Natalie Catapano (+4 – Sewanee) to complete the top five players.
W&L ROUND 2 PLAYER SUMMARIES:
- Sophomore Berkeley Bundy led the way for the Generals with a 10th-place finish at 6-over. Bundy shot a 4-over 76 on Tuesday with two birdies and 10 pars. Bundy was 2-over par on both the front and back nines.
- Junior Ella Wong followed in 16th place overall after a 2-over in the second round. A six-shot improvement from Monday, Wong made two birdies and 12 more pars to complete the tournament at 8-over par overall.
- Senior Julia Haetzel and first-year Toral Bhatt showed further improvement from Monday's opening round. Haetzel was 5-over on Tuesday, 10 shots better than the day before, while Bhatt improved by 14 strokes to shot 2-over on the day. Haetzel placed 43rd overall at 15-over and Bhatt was 46th at 16-over.
- First-year Mackenzie Cline finished up in 31st overall with an 11-over par two-day score. She made two birdies on Tuesday along with nine pars.
- Sophomore Alex Crews played as an individual and, just like Haetzel and Bhatt, improved greatly on her round two score from the day prior. Crews made two birdies on her way to shooting a 3-over 75, which included an even-par 37 on the front nine.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Generals finished fifth outright in par-4 scoring (4.34), while tying for fifth in both par-3 scoring (3.27) and par-5 average (5.28). W&L had the most pars in the field (110), topping the Tartans by two, and also had the third-fewest bogeys (47).
- Wong finished in a tie for the third-best par-4 scoring average in the tournament at 4.10, and she also trailed Nicole McGuire (WashU) by just one par for the most in the field.
