No. 8 Generals tied for fifth through opening round at Historic Triangle

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The No. 8 Washington and Lee women's golf team opened the Historic Triangle Invitational on Monday by shooting a 22-over 310 and sit in a tie for fifth through 18 holes.
 
TEAM & INDIVIDUAL LEADERS THRU ROUND 1:
  • Top-ranked Carnegie Mellon and No. 2 Emory hold the top spot on the team leaderboard, each at 11-over par. No. 20 Denison is six shots off the lead in third, with No. 27 Grinnell at 18-over and in fourth. No. 22 Huntingdon is tied with the Generals in fifth.
  • Samantha Wong (CMU) leads the tournament after a 2-under 70 in the opening round. Mary Charles Davis (Huntingdon) and Carys Code (Emory) are tied for second each at 1-under par, while Anna Klass (72 – Denison) and Kavya Keshav (73 – Grinnell) round out the Top 5.
W&L ROUND 1 PLAYER SUMMARIES:
  • Sophomore Berkeley Bundy was the top General in the first round. She sits in a five-way tie for sixth overall at 2-over par (74). She sank two birdies, one on the front nine and one on the back, with four bogeys and 12 pars.
  • First-year Mackenzie Cline followed Bundy at 4-over par (76) to finish day one in 17th place. Cline was 4-over through her first seven holes, but used a par on 17 and a birdie on 18 to settle in and shot even par over her final 11 holes.
  • Junior Ella Wong is third on Generals' leaderboard and 27th overall with a 6-over score. Wong made par on 13 holes on the day and was 2-over on the back nine.
  • Senior Julia Haetzel rounded out the team scoring for the day with a 10-over 82 to come in 48th through the first day. She was 3-over on the front nine and made 11 pars overall.
  • First-year Toral Bhatt capped off the starting lineup while sophomore Alex Crews played as an individual. Bhatt shot a 14-over and made birdie on the par-3 17th, while Crews was 11-over par.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • The Generals are tied for fourth in par-3 scoring through the first, with an average of 3.35. The team is also tied with No. 4 WashU for the second-most pars (53), and are just one shy of No. 24 Sewanee for the tournament lead.
  • W&L also has the fourth-fewest bogeys in the tournament with 24, just four more than Sewanee, who has the least.
  • Wong's 13 pars in round one are tied for the second most in the field. Bundy is in a tie for seventh in pars made with her 12.
  • Haetzel and Wong made four bogeys on Monday, tied for the 11th fewest. Five players had two bogeys and five players had three.

ROUND 2 DETAILS:
The Generals will close out their fall season on Tuesday with round two of the Historic Triangle Invitational. Players will begin in a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m.
