Mitchell & Brueggeman Named All-ODAC; Mitchell Nabs Third Defensive Player of the Year Honor

FOREST, Va. — The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its 2020-21 men's basketball all-conference team on Wednesday, and Washington and Lee forwards Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) and William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) each were honored.

Mitchell garnered the ODAC Defensive Player of the Year honor for the third consecutive year, and since the league has only awarded the laurel the past three seasons, he is the only player to ever receive the distinction. He was also named to the 18-player all-conference team, as was Brueggeman.

This marks the second time Mitchell has made an all-conference team, after securing a spot on the second team last season. Mitchell led the league in blocks per game this year at 3.6, and despite playing seven fewer games than the leader, he was just six blocks from leading in total blocks and finished third with 18.

Over his five games, Mitchell had career-bests in scoring (13.0 points per game) and rebounding (11.6 rebounds per contest). His rebounding average was third in the league. He also tied the program's single-game blocks record with seven against Emory & Henry on February 16.

For his career, Mitchell set the W&L record in blocks per game (2.2) and finished second in total blocks (186), just four off the school record.

Brueggeman earned his second all-conference honor, after making the first team last season. He led the Blue and White in scoring (16.4 ppg) and was eighth in the league. He also averaged 7.6 rebounds per contest and shot 38.9 percent (14-of-36) from three-point range.

Against Emory & Henry, Brueggeman became the 28th player in program history to score 1,000 career points, and ended his four seasons with 1,045 points, which is 24th on the W&L all-time list. At Shenandoah on February 19, he broke the W&L single-game three-pointers made record with eight, while scoring a career-best 32 points.

Brueggeman concludes his career first on W&L's three-pointers made per game list (2.2 per game), third in three-pointers made (168), seventh in free throw percentage (81.7 percent; 187-229) and 10th in three-point percentage (37.4 percent; 167-449).

Senior guard Buzz Anthony of Randolph-Macon was named the Kurt Axe Memorial Player of the Year, first-year forward Justin Kuthan of Roanoke was the Rookie of the Year, senior guard Kajuan Madden-MacAfee of Ferrum earned the ODAC/Va. Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete honor and Josh Merkel of Randolph-Macon garnered the Bob Johnson Coach of the Year laurel.

The Generals finished the regular season 4-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
